Spooeys! And Other Freeway Interchanges

See them here. Possibly everything you ever wanted to know about freeway interchanges.

“Everybody knows what a cloverleaf looks like — but could you identify a volleyball, a double trumpet, or a spooey if you drove on one in the course of your highway travels?”

Fascinating! You have no idea how much of my time is being wasted on that site as we speak.

dude you rock, this is sweet stuff

I’m familiar with the SPUI (Single Point Urban Interchange).

There is exactly one in the State of Mississippi: Link.

I like the CFI(continuous-flow intersection) which takes the left-turn conflict out of the intersection.

Video demo here.

There’s a Spooey (though I hadn’t heard the name before) near where I live, which looks almost exacty the same as the Spooey illustrated on that page. Considerable delays build up on the ramps and on the main road crossing the interstate during rush hours. Even outside rush hourse, the traffuc lights have a very long cycle. I don’t like it at all.

Are those interchange configurations or sexual positions?

If you’d like a more pedestrian version of typical interchanges: The Caltrans Highway Design Manual, Chapter 500. No interchange names, just the numbers. The designers I’ve met call the common one diamonds and hooks.

Anybody in the twin cities that wants to see a Spooey can find one in front of the Best Buy world headquarters. 494 & Penn.

RRR! I have to go to work!

Closest SPUI I know of to here is at the interchange of Ontario Provincial Highway #406 and Fourth Road near St. Catherines. There is also one that I know of in Ohio, on an interchange at I-270 west of Columbus.

I know all about SPUIs and volleyball interchanges because of my roadgeek background…roadgeeks unite!

Thanks for the link. It’s a cool site, except does anyone else have a problem with the font used on it? I find it hard to read, as if the kerning or something is off.

There’s a single point intechange in Stockton. It’s the Arch Road exit of State Route 99. I’ve never heard anyone call it a SPUI or any other abbreviation. Spooey sounds like spitting, which may be why.

We can only dream.
