Spooje's movie recommendation: Memento

This is a great movie. I saw it twice over the weekend. Starring Guy Peirce(LA Confidential) as a man who cannot form new memories in a search for his wife’s killer. Check out the site here! It’s not in general release yet. It’s only playing in 2 theatres in the LA area.

I agree - this film is a must-see: it’s pretty intelligent and uses original ideas - pretty uncommon nowadays. Incidentally, though films are usually released in the US before coming over here (the UK), I saw Memento back in December… this seems rather fitting, given the structure of the whole thing…

Memento is an excellent, unique film which deserves to be a huge hit. I was released here (in the UK) in September, with very little publicity, however it proved so popular with those who saw it that word of mouth enabled it to perform reasonably well at the box-office.
The film is always at least one step ahead of you (literally). You are kept guessing about the true natures and motivations of the characters, and there are subtle clues (some misleading) for those who are paying attention.
Please see this film, and don’t allow a limited release to ruin its potential.

I should really get a job in advertising

I plan on seeing this during my trip to Manhattan next weekend (even though none of you mentioned it in my “things to do & see in NYC” thread).

Anybody want to give me some advice on which of the following theaters is the best to patronize:

19th Street East 6
890 Broadway

Clearview First & 62nd
400 E. 62nd Street

Lincoln Plaza Cinemas
30 Lincoln Plaza

Lowes 42nd Street E. Walk
247 W. 42nd Street

They all seem to be close by (anything in Manhattan is close to anything else in Manhattan I suppose), so I’d like some recommendations if anybody has any, you know- which theaters have the least sticky floors & screens without stains. I also like to know if the theater is a tunnel (used to be one big theater that has since been sliced up into several skinny “tunnel” mini-theaters).

I concur with Spooje, this is definitely a must-see movie. It can be a little disorienting at first, though, so here’s a tip on how the structure works (this spoils nothing).

The beginning of sequence A is going to be the ending of scene B. In other words, the movie runs backwards (like the “reverse” episode of Seinfeld). For instance, if a sequence starts with Guy eating lunch, sequence B will start with something else, and end with him eating lunch, as he was in the beginning of sequence A (they’ll have a 5-10 second overlap/replay here). Sequence C will, in turn, end with whatever opened sequence B.

It took me 3 or 4 of these to figure it out, so I thought I’d help some of you out.

Spooje, where’d you see it? Also, check your email - I have a question to ask you, but since it’d be a spoiler for everyone else…

Attrayant, 1st and 62nd is a very nice theater; I saw Memento there tonight. I haven’t been to any of the other ones, though. (There’s a movie theater every other block in Manhattan.)

I am bumping this thread to urge people to go see this film. I saw it this weekend and it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time.

I am also recommending this movie. We went to a theater without a clue as to what was playing, and after trying to decide between Tiger-Dragon or some spider movie, a stranger suggested Memento. Said it was film-noirish and got excellent reviews. So we had no idea what the movie was about, but we quickly got absorbed into the storyline. Yes, it was a bit disorienting in the beginning but the sequencing is so integral to the story…argh, this is definitely a movie worth discussing!

I think it has won several awards, including a Sundance (if memory serves me).

I saw Memento last night. Another recommendation for a movie that’s refreshingly different. Nemo Bob says check it out.

My Sleeper of the Year for 2000 was Way of the Gun, and I still think it is an excellent film.

Memento my pick for this year. I can say that at the beginning of May because it’s not just good, it’s going to be a true, genuine classic.

Think Psycho, Rear Window, Night of the Hunter, Taxi Driver… see where I’m going here? It’s that good.

You’ll be missing out bigtime if you don’t see it on the big screen, for reasons that I can’t discuss without spoiling. A good DVD player with a decent zoom feature will be very fun, too. But it won’t be the same.

My philosophy professor recommended this movie, which made me very excited. I’ve been in love with Guy Pearce since Priscilla. (Brooke quote during LA Confidential: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! NOT THE FACE!!!) So you can imagine my disappointment when I realised it wasn’t on tape yet. Feh.

Those of you who have seen the movie may want to check out some wacky theories in the Memento SPOILERS Thread. Be sure to check out the offical website that ArchiveGuy dug up.

It may be time to open a new spoilers thread for further discussion, since the first one went off on a tangent.

Besides, I’ve seen it again and have some new ideas.

In the spirit of “seen that, now what?” I’d recommend the movie Exotica for those of you who liked Memento. While it does not have the memory loss gimmick it has a similar theme of watching the characters’ actions and trying to figure out their motivations as the movie progresses. Plus it has schoolgirl strippers, which was an important element Memento lacked.

On another note, what’s the deal with Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano? Memento is the third movie they’ve co-starred in since 1999 (the others being The Matrix and New Blood). They didn’t have any special onscreen “chemistry”, they’re not a couple, they aren’t part of a particular director’s acting stable. Neither has even been the star of any of these movies. Why have they been cast together in three seperate movies in such a short time?
