Spooky (But Great) Songs of the 1970s?

Yes to both.

This is a thread winner if you ask me. The line, “We were flying along and hit something in the air” used to creep me the fuck out. Still does (as I prepare to fly next week)

Rick’s wife disagrees.

None spookier…

And at the other end of the decade :

Helen Reddy, Angie Baby. Very unsettling, very reminiscent to Ode to Billy Joe. And a hit and a great song.

If you feel that way, you can’t be wrong.

Personally, I never saw that as spooky… My old band even played it live before. Not a happy song, but “Cities On Flames” would be a better example from their discography.

From their second album, in 1973, ELO’s “Kuiama.” The lyrics (it’s an anti-war song) are haunting, but it’s the instruments, particularly the interplay of the strings and the synthesizers, and the long, minor key play-out at the end, that make it feel “spooky” to me.

A whole lot of BOC could be here. Veteran of the Psychic Wars, Harvester of Eyes, Joan Crawford, Fire of Unknown Origin…

Too Much Cowbell makes Reaper seem positively cheery.

Triumvirat - March To The Eternal City from the “Spartacus” album.

I remember once driving up I-44 from Rolla MO to STL at 2 or 3 in the morning and hearing this come on the radio. Very spooky. Then again I was half drunk at the time.

How about some kraut rock?

ETA: this is from the album “Wolf City”, maybe Amon Düül II’s best album. But their whole catalog is worth checking out.

It doesn’t get much better than this. No more cowbell needed, either.

Have you heard the version Gus recorded for the film “Scream”? Gotta love those cellos.

In its own way, I think this one fits. Getting older, can’t deny the grave will get you eventually. What a voice…

The more the better. I love music from all over… I love “Green Bubble Raincoated Man”, “Jalousie”, “Surrounded By The Stars”, and “Touchmaphal”… I just listened to one of their albums, “Phallus” something, but didn’t care for it. I don’t even remember it, lol. I’ll check this one out today - thanks!

Werewolf, by the Five Man Electrical Band.

Who was the other half?

I swear DC Comics did direct adaptations of Angie Baby and In the Year 2525 for their early 70s anthologies…but Ive never been able to find it

More like dull as a butterknife. Utter, simplistic dreck, based on what a bass player who has three minutes of musical experience comes up with.

Well, that’s an opinion, I guess.
