Sports Talk Radio - favorites and most hated

I LOVED Arli$$!

I really like Brian Kenny on ESPN radio. He has this whole “Science” shtick, but I like it.

Lamar, what station is that? I could actually listen to that.

It’s AM 1600 5PM to 8PM weekdays.

In Boston, we’re no longer limited to the asshole/moron station. Now, there’s a juvenile humor station too for the morning, and a reasonably intelligent one for the drive home (those hosts never fit in when they were at the asshole/moron station). Much more to my liking. The juvenile humor guys are the same ones who had the morning show when that station was mix rock, but now they talk sports instead of music - and well enough, too.

Oh, right, that’s WEEI 850 and SportsHub 98.5, if you care. If 'EEI dumped the unlistenable Dennis and Callahan in the morning, and made Ordway keep the arguing and interrupting under better control in the PM, there wouldn’t be another station. They’re shaping up now, but it’s too late.

I’m pretty lazy about it but I devour pretty much all the ESPN content. The Football Today and First Draft podcasts are great. Fanatsy Focus for all the sports is worth a listen even if you don’t play the sports if you want to geek out. The BS Report is an all-time fave. For non-sports stuff you can do any of the NPR stuff and I like Adam Carolla’s podcast a ton, he’s built a little network with sports, cars and home improvement stuff too but I don’t listen to them often. Dameshek has a show with him that can be good, I enjoy Dameshek in small doses.

I’m sure there’s a lot of good non-ESPN stuff out there but I don’t have the hours in he day to listen to half of what I d/l so I’m not exactly out shopping around for more.

So much to hate, so little time.

Jim Rome is a douchbag who started by appealing to college age males (the old 18-25 demographic) with his call in smack-down bullshit. The callers saying OUT!, then Rome going over the call ad nauseum if he liked it. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if these calls were staged. Clearly, the callers wrote down and rehearsed their calls. I listened to that crap for a week, and that was enough for me. He’s now what, 40? And he still plays the tough guy schtick. From the opening of his TV Show, where he stands with his legs spread apart like he has to get a fan to blow out the stink of his crotch, to his inane player hosts who walk around a locker room doing interviews to his own interviewing style, which is terrible, his whole show sucks. The only part of the TV show worth watching is when he has someone who actually knows something about a sport on the couch durning the last 8 minutes of the show, giving opinions on topics. But Rome can’t just work with that. He still has to ruin every show with an “I’m out!” Fuck you, and the pony you rode in on, short man! (and it was JIM Everett, from the Rams who went after him on his old ESPN show… great ratings for him, so all was good. I for one was hoping Jim Everett would have punched all of his teeth down his smug little throat.)

Colin Cowherd - A pompous, arrogant dick. Everything said about him in this thread is true, IMO. It’s like he made a decision somewhere during his career to focus on everything that is number one in popularity. Must appeal to 18-25 year olds? Great! I’ll do that! Hockey isn’t big for ratings? Great! It doesn’t exist, I won’t talk about it, and will mock it every chance I get. East Coast Bias? You betcha! That’s where the big bucks are, and that’s what life is all about, doncha know? Want me to stick my tongue in the ass of the metaphorical NYC? Done! All other cities pale in comparison, except on the east coast, where NYC is number 1, but I’ll still give hummers to Boston, Philly and DC. And he is very smart. Just ask him! He’ll tell you all day. He’s a one-time fatty who was on the west coast (Portland?) with a career going nowhere… lost weight, sold his sole to ESPN, and now has a radio and TV show to show for it. Maybe he DOES know what he’s doing. I for one can’t stand anything he does, and won’t listen or watch anything he does anymore. He’s an arrogant dick who is exactly the same as the “meatballs” he talks about, except he has a radio show where he can cut off a caller instead of being forced to listen to him.

I see I’m getting a bit off track. I’ll stick to radio.

I like Dan Patrick, but not as much as I did when Rob Dibble was with him. Those two made me laugh out loud. Dan just seems bitter these days. I think ESPN put him through the ringer.

Tony Bruno gets another vote from me, as does Valvano. Both guys are easy to listen to, aren’t trying to be too hip and cool for their own good, and deliver good sports radio.

Mike and Mike are very vanilla, and they have to be for the morning drive. But I stopped listening to them long ago, when the commercials and sportcenter breaks really made them irrelevant. How much do they talk every half hour, maybe 9 minutes?

Once again, I show my age. Hey kid! Get off my lawn!

There are almost no nationally syndicated sports radio shows worth listening to.

I used to like Dan Patrick, too, but he is almost unlistenable now. He’s way too full of himself. He talks as much about his bit parts in horrible Adam Sandler movies as he does about sports. I went to Patrick’s alma mater, UD, and a lit prof there told me he had Patrick in a few classes and he was apparently an arrogant jerk back then, too.

Mike and Mike are way too soft on all their guests. Greenie is way, way too PC.

Cowherd is completely annoying. Can’t listen to his show.

I do like Mel Kiper, Jr. on Saturday mornings. Mostly because I like his voice.

Are you me? I cannot STAND Cowherd … he’s a huge, egotistical blowhard who thinks “Popular” equals “Good.” Always. No exceptions. He can’t stand the thought of an underdog or a small-market team winning a championship, cause nobody cares, he sez! Yankees/Red Sox, all the time! No need for the rest of the major leagues, only mouthbreathers care anyway! SEC Football! All other college football is Division IV, nobody watches! And … we all know he’s right, because he’s so much freakin’ smarter than us.

Okay, take a breath … when we first got ESPN radio around here, it was Mike and Mike, followed by Tony Kornheiser, then Dan Patrick. I really enjoyed that lineup. I miss Kornheiser on the radio so much … he was entertaining in a crotchety way, but never took himself too seriously and liked to talk about more than just sports. Patrick and Dibble were great together.

I’d still prefer Patrick now to that blowhard Cowherd. Our local station now tape-delays Patrick and runs his show in the afternoon, but I’ve e-mailed them to ask if they could run Patrick instead of Cowherd. Apparently not.

I enjoy Mike and Mike for my drive to work, but yeah .. it’s drive time. You’re going to get tons of commercials, that’s where the radio stations make their money. It’s called “drive time” in the biz for a reason.

I also enjoyed Czaban the little bit I heard him around here on the Fox Sports station, before it turned to classic country music.

Yup. He even ranted last year about how Butler going to the championship game was bad for college basketball, and it would have been disastrous if they had won.

And as a promo for his show, he had his little rant against Jenn Sterger (the Brett Favre penis sext recipient), about how “she’s doing this for attention - just look at all the radio shows she’s appeared on as a result! She won’t be on mine, because I’m not asking her.” For the record, Sterger appeared on zero radio shows during the controversy.

Goodness, yes, that was the Golden Age of ESPN Radio. Kornheiser was awesome, and Patrick was still teamed with Dibble and they were great. I could have sat and listened to those three shows all day.

Is that “JT the Brick” clown still around? His show is the most unlistenable thing on radio. I’d rather be strapped in a chair with have battery leads clipped to my nipples and listen to the Kars for Kids jingle over and over for eternity than listen to 5 minutes of that supreme douche.

Tony Bruno and Ben Maller are my favorites on the national scene.

Cowherd is on Sports Nation TV with Michelle Beadle. I like her very much. She knows her sports, has a sense of humor about it and it real easy on the eyes.

Thanks.

Craig Carton, of NYC’s “Boomer and Carton” show – both love and hate, in equal doses. He’s an unbelievable douchebag, but he’s generally an entertaining douchebag.

Unreserved hate for everyone on WIP radio, mostly Howard Eskin. I chuckle to myself every time someone here mentions “The Dio Show”…I’ve always thought of that as “The Eskin Show”. You’re wrong, he’s right, his opinions are facts and everyone else is obviously too stupid to understand that.

Mike and Mike are the rice cakes of sports talk radio: bland, acceptably palatable, and barely filling. You could get deeper analysis from reading ESPN.com headlines.

I liked Jim Rome when I listened to him because he actually developed his own show with its own subculture. All the national ESPN Radio stuff seems like it was the end result of focus group testing.

Sportstalk 620 KTAR in Phoenix is pretty decent with a good mix of local and national sports news.

Here’s what they discussed today.

I avoid Mike and Mike. They don’t know baseball and hockey is never mentioned unless there was a fight or a crazy play.

I can’t believe Jim Rome is still on the air. For a long time, every sports talk host was doing the smack talk thing.

What sports do you like? I subscribe to quite a few podcasts.

A local (Boston) one I LOATHE is “Dennis & Callahan”. Mostly because Callahan is a frustrated political writer writing sports.

Hate Rome. Best moment he ever had was when Jim Everett pimpslapped him on national TV.
Like Cowherd. Not really sure why but I do.

Speaking of hate, whatever happened to the Fabulous Sports Blob?
