Not sure. Maybe its more public now.
I am guessing many were confused and ashamed, and afraid to tell anyone how they felt. If they did speak out, they were told that they were being silly, or were crazy, or were making it up. Some may have even been threatened, or had someone try to “fix” them through discipline.
That’s what transphobia causes. People who are made to feel bad, broken, sick, because their body and mind aren’t in synch with cultural norms.
Don’t accept any claims from the anti trans people without rock solid citations. You say the rate of kids transitioning has skyrocketed? Prove it. Show the numbers. Going from zero to a hundred kids in the US (for example) would be an infinite increase as far as percentages go, but it wouldn’t be particularly alarming.
They would feel bad enough as it was, they don’t need people shaming them.
Absolutely, yes.
Certain folk are claiming the doctors who are helping them are “butchering children.”
That’s because they believe the transphobic lies about doctors performing surgery on small children to change them into conforming physically to their gender identity. In reality that sort of thing isn’t done before 18. And typically even adults go through rigorous counseling and screening before undergoing such a serious procedure. It’s not something done casually.
Certain folk also claimed that Democrats kidnapped children and trapped them in the basement of a pizza parlor to drain their blood.
Certain folk are idiots.
Well, if these numbers hold up, the rate of transgender occurrence in adult populations is about 390 per 100,000. According to this, there were over 73 million kids in the US last year. So, one could assume that we have potentially 284,700 transgendered children in the United States.
Christine Jorgensen transitioned in the 1950s.
Renée Richards transitioned in the 1970s.
Just hit Vox yesterday. It’s a long piece.
It has a distinct point of view that folks who are - to one degree or another, for lack of a better word - transphobic may not agree with. But I would hope that anyone involved in this discussion would read and compare with other coverage of the issue involving trans minors, and judge some of their preconceptions against what is given in the article.
Among other things, it talks about youths attempting transition in earlier eras, as well as some concrete statistics on detransitioning.
Pew research:
Taking out “nonbinary” which doesn’t mean very much, you end up with one in fifty young people thinking that they are really the opposite sex. Nearly 10 times the rate for 30-49s and actually 10 times the rate for 50+
No stats on medicalization, but young people are heavily encouraged to medicalize if they say they have a transgender identity.
There’s a graph in this news story from my home state showing how child transitions have risen from 2007. Update here showing the rate tripled in the two years following.
The fact that transition rates are skyrocketing particularly in young people is one of the most well-known facts in the trans debate.
If there’s no stats on medicalization, how do you know that young people are heavily encouraged to medicalize?
I know a lot of young people. And their families.
Is it possible to sprain a muscle in your eye?
Asking for a friend.
“People I know told me,” isn’t data.
Yeah, how do we know it’s not confirmation bias?

one in fifty young people thinking that they are really the opposite sex.
How is that not denying both their gender identity and the very existence of trans people?
It’s the one thing nobody could ever possibly be mistaken about. No matter how young they are.
Wait, what’s the one thing nobody could ever possibly be mistaken about?

It’s the one thing nobody could ever possibly be mistaken about
Do you mean sex? About 1 out of 100 births in the US is intersex (for an inclusive definition of intersex, for a list of frequencies by condition, here is a page). There may be chromosomal or anatomical circumstances which make sex unclear at birth. Sometimes it is something like XXY chromosomes. Other times it is the presence of both ovaries and testicles, or both a vagina or penis, or a genitals that are developmentally somewhere between a vagina and a penis.
What is the sex of an individual born with male genitalia and uterus?
Even sex at birth is non-binary.

And typically even adults go through rigorous counseling and screening before undergoing such a serious procedure
Trans rights advocates and others often claim that the screenings are too rigorous.
