Spring Heeled Jack

Can anyone shed some light on this guy for me?

Apparently he was a marauder during the nineteenth century. I’d read of him in my youth, but dismissed him as fiction.

Turns out he’s real, or at least an urban legend, but I can’t find many accounts of him that aren’t by people who want to believe in the supernatural.

The best I’ve found yet is:

What’s up? Is he an urban legend? Did he exist? Has there been anything difinitive printed on the guy?

Well, he’s real, in the same way that Sasquatch, the Jersey Devil, and the Loch Ness Monster are real–some people have claimed to see him, but there’s really no conclusive evidence.

WEIRD WEIRD WEIRD. I just read about this guy in an old book I found (“Strange Stories, Amazing Facts”) and I was about to ask the board about him.

He shows up in the novel, “The Anubis Gates,” by Tim Powers. If your interested in a fictional take on this, um, fictional character.

There’s a Steven King short story in Night Shift where the narrator gets possessed by said person.

Heres a few points to ponder:

Just noticed this little thing in the page

“Investigators discovered 2 footprints 3 inches deep. The depth of the prints seemed to suggest some type of ‘spring’ mechanism in the shoes. Note: A spring apparatus was tested by the Germans during the war and resulted in a 85%
failure rate (the men broke their ankles).”
Notice how A meaning 1 is in there? It’s like trying to put a man in space using only a watermelon and a harmonica.
Perhaps Springy Jack used a different design.

Duke? Nope, it was the butler!

“It was during this time that the great Duke of Wellington, who was now 70 years old, joined in the search. Some sources indicate that the Duke may have had several close encounters with Spring Heeled Jack. Unfortunately, Spring Heeled Jack was never found and in fact, intensified his attacks during the following months.”

Perhaps the Duke was Springy Jack? He’d know when and where the posse would be, and of course he had met Jack or he could just be crazy.
Albino Jack?
“He wore a large helmet and a sort of tight-fitting costume that felt like oilskin. But the cape was just like the ones worn by the policemen. His hands were as cold as ice and like powerful claws. But the most frightening thing about him was his eyes. They shone like balls of fire.”

The police statement points that his eyes must be a brighter colour, therefore being either Red/Yellow/Orange. In my experience the only colour that would have been around then would be Red, that would account for a loss of pigment in the eyes. Could Jack be an albino?
“Spring Heeled Jack had an embroidered letter ‘W’ on his shirt. Similar to a coat of arms, the Gold ‘W’ seemed to indicate someone of royalty.”

More evidence that would show Duke might be the culprit.
“The sentry fired at the intruder and claimed that bullets did not affect him”
Guns we’re at par in accuracy with todays rifles. If the sentry was blinded, how could he possibly shoot with any accuracy at that?

“they rushed to the point where he had landed (behind some houses) only to find a helmeted man, clothed in white, standing there waiting.”

Wasn’t Jack wearing a black cloak, or was that after labour day?

Strawberry Spring is the short story. Good tale.

Well, first off, how could the depths of the prints indicate some kind of “spring” mechanism in the shoe? Wouldn’t someone leaping that high leave deep prints anyway, springs or no springs?
And secondly, if you think he used a different design, then maybe some of us dopers should try to build or design a working SHJ device. Certainly if he did it in the 19th century the teeming millions could do it today. Anybody up for it?

I am! Imagine playing Rugby with those shoes :open_mouth:
