Senior modding: Hey, you’re not allowed political jabs in FQ.
Don’t tell me; tell the cats.
Like they’d care.
Interestingly, the governor of OH had an op-ed piece in this morning’s Times. He described how wonderful Springfield is. He was actually born there and grew up a few miles away. He loves that the Haitian immigrants have helped revitalize the town and while there are some problems (they need creole translators for example) all in all it has worked out well.
Oh, he is still backing the serial liars.
Our governor keeps proving himself to be a NEARLY sane GOPer. Brings us to the edge of thinking he’s a good dude then…splat.
So is this the time to mention the new American Recipes Cookbook from Springfield? A lot of the recipes use catsup.
Do any use hot dogs?
Or a hot dog with cats upon it?
You may not be surprised to hear this sort of story happens in other countries. Over here, it’s been swans (that gives the tabloids a possible royal angle too, since most swans are by tradition owned by the monarch, cue tabloid outrage).
Moderating
I think we have moved well past the factual portion of this topic. Moving to P&E.
FQ rules and the above mod notes no longer apply. Please follow P&E rules from here on out.
A Haitian advocacy organization filed private criminal charges Tuesday against former President Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. JD Vance, asking a judge to order their arrest for allegedly disrupting public services and making false alarms after repeating false claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.
Update:
Haiti was the first Independent Latin American country to emerge after a slave revolt in 1804. These people are seeking tjeir Manifest destiny to living free and productive lives. They continue to risk life and limb, anyway they can since I remember from the 1980-90’s arriving in Bahamas or S Fla. washing up dead on the shore.
Why not Ohio?
This is awesome.
Note that, minutes later, Trump decided to not visit Springfield after all.
Oh, thank goodness. He was only going to stir up protests and therefore more right-wing outrage.
Politico thinks he still may do it. But I’m guessing Susie Wiles (his somewhat leas extreme campaign manager) distracts him whenever he mentions it.
Could they pass an ordinance requiring immediate criminal registration, including fingerprinting, when any person with more than 33 felony count convictions enters town?
It’s all fun and games until a factory owner with 330 employees receives death threats considered credible by the FBI, and is advised to increase his work site’s and family’s security. Gifted article.
“We have different opinions and beliefs, but we’re here to make metal parts,” he told the staff. “We’re not here to debate immigration.”
Quite.
Government by threats and thugs.
Republicans hate it when people just do their jobs.
I live near the city and have the benefit of hearing from local news and city leaders on the issue. The Haitians weren’t specifically sent to the city by design. They came here as part of a Federal program originally targeting the problems created by the earthquake. It was expanded because of all the civil unrest. The Haitians who originally came to Springfield of their own volition found jobs and encouraged others to come.
This is a city of 58,000 and this represented an influx of 15,000 additional people. This exacerbated a housing shortage and raised housing costs. It brings with it an increase of students which is a financial burden for the school system. There is also a language barrier because they speak French or Creole and the city is struggling with communication issues. The Mayor was actively calling for Federal help with translators. This affects schools as well as social programs. There’s no budget to cover these additional costs. One of the things the city wants to teach the adults is the skill of driving.
