I wonder…did they take the dried up, mummified Laika out first?

 I thought the UN had Sputnik in the lobby?

There is a replica at the Air and Space museum in DC.

If you read the article you would see that the “real” one, the one launched into space, burned up upon re-entry. This may be a model, a mock-up, or an unsed sputnik, or a total fraud.
I’m pretty Laika burned up as well.

I did read it, but it made no mention of the one I swear I saw in the UN lobby, hence the confusion. I haven’t been to the UN in maybe 15 years or so. Perhaps it was a travelling exhibit or one of the 4 backups that I saw.

Let’s pool our money and bid on it!

I’m in for $0.65.

Yes, but she was dead at the time. There were no plans of recovering the capsule and this site detail the most prevalent story surrounding her demise. This site OTOH discounts the ‘failed to separate’ part of the story. In either event, the satellite remained in orbit nearly six months and she was long dead before it burned up on re-entry.
