The Yahoo! home page has a little scroll of news items, gossip bits, human interest stories, etc. I’m guessing it’s tailor-made to each ISP, as of the 52 items on the scroll the last time I looked, about 8 of them had to do with Chicago (two about restaurants, two about real estate, and I forget the rest).
Similarly, Pandora tells me several times per day that I am the “…100th Chicago listener to be chosen for…”
I live nowhere near Chicago. :smack: It’s 200 miles away, and I haven’t been there in months. And the last time I was there it was only for a few hours.
That’s not spyware, it just goes off your IP address. And lots of times if they don’t have anything for your city, they’ll just go to the biggest one in your state.
There’s a site that I visit occasionally that has ads for some hook up site that does the same thing. It’s got a picture of some more-or-less attractive woman, and the caption, “Hundreds of hot women in San Quentin are waiting to hear from you!”
Now, I’m not one to judge, but I’m pretty sure those aren’t women who are waiting to hear from me.
(For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, San Quentin is a maximum security men’s prison, and the location of California’s Death Row.)
