SQLPLUS in VMS: How do you pass values from SQL+ to the OS?

For example, suppose have a .com file that runs a SQL+ script, and the SQL+ script runs a PL/SQL proc. Passing a value from PL/SQL to the embedding SQLPLUS session is trivial, but how do you pass a value from the SQLPLUS session out to the OS command script?
