Sssssnakessss....

A question–are there any known snakes that are both venomous and constrictors?

BTW–any nifty snake info is no worse than a semi-hijack.

The Mussurana comes to mind.

A great begining!

Any others?

Would the garter snake count? I always thought of them as a constrictor, but recently it has come out that they alsy possess a mild venom.

Sssssnakednessss…

That’s what you mean ?

You are correct about the mildly venomous saliva in garter snakes, but I’m curious about why you consider them constrictors. Have you handled one and it wrapped around your hand? That’s not constricting.

Constricting is a feeding-related behavior. Constrictors are snakes that can kill their prey by squeezing, preventing the prey animal from breathing. Garter snakes, based on lots of personal observation and everything I’ve read about them, don’t do that.

Motherfucker!! Kill it! KILL IT!!!

Why?

It eats other snakes.

Garter snake facts are interesting, but not…constricting.

Any others?

The Mussurana pictured at Wikipedia is swallowing prey. Seems to be an amphibian with legs and not a snake. Thought I’d mention that lest someone unfamiliar with snakes think that is it’s tongue hanging out of it’s mouth.

Here’s another pic.

Typical encounter, Oak meets snake in the woods:

BANG

What kind was it? (pokes corpse with stick…or maybe shoots it again, for good measure).

Just going on what I was taught back in the dark ages in science class. :stuck_out_tongue: Way back then, snakes were divided into venomous and non-venomous, and the non-venomous killed by constriction. This was before it was known that garters were mildly venomous. So, you’re saying that they DON’T constrict their prey? I have no idea… never seen one eat, I am genuinely interested in this!

Garter snakes swallow thier struggling prey alive. They may have mild venom but I’ve seen garter snakes and thier close relative, the water snake eat a lot of times and the prey was simply seized and swallowed alive.

There are many non-constricting /non venomous snakes.

Wow! Ignorance fought! Thank you!
