Hey folks I’m trying to find a Standing Drawing/Illustration/Art desk. I love art and draw as much as I can and would like to get a drawing desk that I can use while standing. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks everyone!
Bump
Try looking for an old drafting table. Some of them could be cranked up high enough that you could stand at them.
Twenty years ago, graphic artists and designers couldn’t get rid of them fast enough as they switched to computers.
Thank you and that is a real shame btw. ( Sigh ) If only I could get in a Delorean and head far back into the 20th century to a time where I could make a living doing what I love the most!
Well thanks again
you have a webpage with your drawings?
I haven’t gotten to that stage yet but hopefully eventually
For anyone wondering why I’m looking for a standing one is because I’m up to speed about how bad sitting is for you and am trying to avoid it as much as possible.
How much pressure to you put on your drawing surface? If you keep it light, you could get a Lobo-style easel and clamp a drawing board in it.
If you tend to press down or lean on your surface, that may not be the best idea. There are still plenty of drafting tables available, although even at nice art supply store you may have to order one. Unfortunately, even adjustable-height ones don’t generally go up to true standing height. Keep an eye on Craigslist and go estate sale hunting on weekends. Estate sales, if you don’t know, are like garage sales when old people pass away, and that’s who still own big drafting tables.
If you always draw on a flat (horizontal) surface anyway, and don’t need it to tilt, just search for a standing desk and pick one that seems sturdy.
A perfect way to give yourself a headache/bad neck/bad back.
Contrary to perceived wisdom here, drawing boards/drafting tables are still readily available through good art or graphic supply stores. Illustrators still use them, even if us graphic designers have abandoned them. I used to have one with an adjustable high stool so I could perch when I got tired of standing.
Good ones aren’t particularly cheap, but then it’s a false economy to get a flimsy one that will wobble under pressure.
I worked at a fine art supply store for 15 odd years. None of the drafting tables we sold could really be used for standing and drawing, even the high ones that were used with tall drafting chairs. Maybe if the user was shorter.
Since by the time I left we sold maybe two tables a year, they decided not to have the ‘real’ ones on display. Just one tiny crappy one and a snazzy glass-top one that still didn’t sell.
Dick Blick should have something acceptable to you. I found this one in a second: Alvin Ensign Drafting Table | BLICK Art Materials . Pricey, but I’m sure they have others. I thoroughly regret getting rid of my 70’s era similar model in a cross-country move. Thought I could replace it for cheap, but no.
As someone else already suggested, certain easels may fit the bill, too. Check for one recommended for pastel work. It will have all kinds of crazy angles and heights, and should work with a piece of MDF or hardboard that you can get cut to size for $15 at the hardware store as your drawing board.
For a really cheap, quick fix, as you sound like a student, you might get an (adjustable) lectern. I once had one of those, too… You can put a drawing board on that if the surface is small.
Standing desks are becoming popular. There are plenty of options out there, although if you’re looking for one that also tilts, there’s this. Adjustable height (but you can’t adjust it low enough to sit at, unless you’re using something like a bar stool). The top surface can tilt up to 15 degrees from horizontal. If you’re looking for more room, they also make a bigger one.
I have three drafting tables, all of them old wooden versions of the Blick one. A huge one 3’x5’ at my office that now stores a whole bunch of old plans, a smaller one at home that stores stuff too, and I think a third one that is disassembled somewhere. The first two still has a parallel rule and a rubberized surface. Haven’t really used them for drafting since I switched to AutoCAD R9.
Ouch that one isn’t cheap lol
What about these drafting tables?
That seems a lot more reasonable and I love the look of it too
Find a problem, solve a problem and you have a business. Designs a complete line of standing type utility and office furniture. We are now aware of problems with sitting. Excellent basis for a complete line
There was a review on ars recently of a convertible sitting/standing desk. The reviewer paid six hundred dollars for it and, well, had issues.
