Maybe he found a lot of worlds that, when viewed through a specific sensor type, produce a rainbow-like pattern?
Yes, two of them. That in itself gave me 1,000 MC’s, or 6 tech upgrades with 100 MC’s left over.
tell me what happened to the androsynth right now!!!
to JohnT: For some reason, a huge part of me wishes I could be there watching you play… I’d love to see someone playing the game for the first time, who would actually enjoy it. You have to admit it takes a special kind of gamer to enjoy Star Control II.
So who do you like in the World Frungy Championships this year? I think the Bombers are pretty strong, myself.
The whole fuel for RU via the Melnorme is a technique I tend to use a lot whenever I play; it certainly sounds like you’ve got things well in hand, JohnT.

One of my all-time favorite Let’s Play series was of SC2 for precisely this reason. It’s great to watch a person fall in love with the game.

Frungy frungy frungy!
What happens when the UrQuan lose the war? Is the game essentially over at that point, or does it continue, just with a new enemy?
No, you can still win, but at a greater and greater price (from a story perspective). Plus, at that point, you’re really on the clock. Overall, it’s better to make sure you don’t give them a chance to lose.
That said, there is, I believe, at least one way to add some time to the clock:
When you make friends with the Utwig, they will go attack just the Kohr-ah with the help of the Supox. I think this adds a year to your timer, but don’t hold me to that. Also, I know you can trick the Thraddash into attacking the Kohr-ah, but I don’t know if that adds to your time.
I think you can get the Ilwrath to do something like that too, if you can stand to talk to them that long.
If the Ur-Quan lose the war…
The Kohr-Ah’s sphere of influence will slowly move, I think, in a counterclockwise direction. Each race’s territory will then shrink and disappear, their homeworlds destroyed and replaced with the rubble you see on the Androsynth’s homeworld, something like that. When it gets to your starbase, it gets destroyed and you lose the game.
BTW guys, a fan group is supposedly releasing an HD mod for this game that increases the resolution to HD quality and makes other various improvements. I will definitely drop all my other games to be playing this when it comes out… supposedly by new years day. You can find more on the ur-quan masters forum (just google for it). Been looking forward to this mod for a LONG time!! The guy(s) had to go through and make HD versions of about 16,000 images I think.
I dunno, I don’t particularly feel that this game would be improved by an HD remake. It’s just…so… not about the graphics.
I guess it might be nice, but it’s not exactly a “Holy cow, must go play immediately!” offering.
This is the first I’ve heard of it. I’m excited!
SC2 was definitely not all about graphics. The better graphics in SC3 didn’t really help, but that whole game was a mistake. If they do this, they better do it right. I wouldn’t mind an upgrade from the sprite graphics as long as the gameplay is preserved exactly as it was.
Finished it!
Damn, that’s a tight timeline. Perhaps I spent too much time in Hyperspace, but I didn’t get everything done until late in 2158 (The Kor-Ah were to win their war in early 2159.)
This was my third game, btw.
So… what’s SC1 like? Any good?
SC1 is basically just the melee section of SC2; no story-based campaign at all. Really no reason to find it as you can just play with the SC1 ships in Melee mode if you want.
(There’s some kind of strategic game that I never really tried to figure out).
It’s a pretty interesting if slightly simplistic strategic game, actually, the problem is that the computer isn’t much fun to play against.
Are there any other games in the SC2 mode? I’ve been itching to play it again, but don’t really want to bother with trying to “win” the story. I just want to explore the universe, kick some ass and chew some bubblegum.
Not that I know of, really. Uh. You might like Starflight 2, I suppose, but somehow, that whole genre seems to have pretty much died out and now you only get generic 4X stuff or action based “blow stuff up as you travel the universe” (which comes in two flavors, 1st person 3D, and top down 2D) games.
I always liked Alien Legacy. It does the same “real time, constantly advancing plot” mechanic as SC2, and includes a lot of exploration and research, but this game’s set in a single star system that you’re attempting to colonize.
I went ahead and bought Imperialism II over at GOG.com and will give that a whirl - I did like the first game, didn’t realize that there was a sequel.
