Star Search

Have any Star Search contestants ever made it to the big time?

I thought I had completely forgotten about this show, but I had a dream (or rather, nightmare) last night that I was competing in the TV Spokesmodel category.

Once the screaming subsided, I started to remember all those eager souls - high school dance teams, would-be stand-up comics, “actors”, emaciated beauty queens with large teeth, and karaoke kings and queens. And I wondered if any of their dreams of success in the entertainment industry came true. Anyone?

Sinbad.

I am pretty sure that some famous female singer was on there too. Like Shania Twain maybe? (I sure am a lot of help, aren’t I?)

I believe Alanis Morrissette was on Star Search, but lost.

Rosie O’Donnel, for whatever that’s worth…

Let’s not forget everyone’s favorite Britany Spears.

Destiny’s Child. I think there were about 8 members back then

I always watch those “Before They Were Stars” shows on VH1, so I think I can remember a few.

Leann Rhymes (<-Sp?)
Tatyana Ali
Tiffany
Justin Timberlake

Guess that’s all I can think of.

if i recall correctly, when sinbad won, he beat dennis miller.

Christina Aguilera was on there too.

FTR, Christina, Justin Timberlake, and Destiny’s Child all lost. I think Britney did too.

Jenny Jones.

I’m sure that resulted in years of therapy for poor Dennis.

Indeed, Dennis will still make a sarcastic comment about it every now and then.

The country group Sawyer Brown won repeatedly on that show, and the group still seems to be making a paycheck, although not being a country music fan I don’t know how successful it is.

Not only was Jenny Jones on there, but she was a stand-up comedian back then(I guess you could still call here that).

Ok, we’ve got Sinbad, Jenny Jones, Britany Spears, Christina Aguilera and Rosie O’Donnel.

This brings up the obvious question: have any good actors, singers, comedians, etc. ever won on Star Search?

–sublight.

Don’t forget Brad Garrett (Raymond’s brother Robert on Everybody Loves Raymond). That may be his only visible TV work, but he has done a lot of voice-over work. He’s not incredibly successful (yet), but I think he’s a pretty good comedian.

"And for those who might be skeptical about whether such a venture can really lead to success, just check out this list of some of the people who performed on “Star Search” before they made it big: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Drew Carey, Rosie O’Donnell, LeAnn Rimes, Tatyana Ali and Alanis Morissette. THAT’S quite a line-up, huh? "

and of course the fabulous Sam Harris

Keanu Reeves lost as spokesmodel in one of the first seasons.

Long story.

PS Oh yeah, and our very own Cecil Adams was a finalist in the stand-up comic contest.

You all believe me, right?
