Could they do that? The Kzinti were a race from Larry Niven’s Known Space novels (as were the Slavers). I would think that Niven holds the copyright on those creations, and any use of them (other than in the one Star Trek animated episode that he wrote) would have to be cleared through him.

Wouldn’t have to call them ‘kzinti’, just something that sounds like a cat sneezing.
There’s all sorts of felinoid beings in sci fi, wouldn’t be hard to throw Niven a tribute without crossing any copyright boundaries.

Bit of trivia regarding that animated episode: It is the ONLY example of TOS-era Star Trek (TV and movies) that does not contain William Shatner. It is also probably the best of the animated episodes…
