I have a confession to make. I don’t like Star trek that much. Nontheless I watched almost all episodes of “new generation”, “ds9”, and “voyager” (I can’t stand the original series). I have been watching the new series “enterprise” (on my computer, the fact is it is not in the tv in my country) and It seems to me is more of the same.
I think they had a magnificent opportunity to show the imaginary first years of the human exploration of the galaxy without the need of making those horribles episodes about problems with the holodeck and time travel. It seems ther will be lot of that in this new show.
So, what do you think?
No. Well, I’m watching it (got a friend who tapes it for me) in hopes that it may get good, but mediocre acting and even worse writing with horribly unoriginal stories just isn’t going to cut it for me. I’m giving it one season to get good and then I’m out.
Hey Estilicon, can you tell a fellow Argentinian how did you managed to get the Enterprise episodes?
We should post in english or the other dopers will think there is an argentinian conspiracy to take over this board…
[sub]oh wait there is a conspiracy[/sub]
Gracias!
Frodo.

oh well… 20 posts and alreaddy a double post, (with the usual third ‘explaining’ post following).
what can i say… its the browser’s fault…
[sub]yes…, blame microsoft![/sub]
Guys, not to be a pain, but… you know what’s going to happen. Sites that are named after the greek god of sleep that happen to be involved in the passing of at least one completely legitimate file in a peer to peer network shouldn’t be mentioned.
And there’s the whole posting in spanish, yadda yadda, morse code, yadda.
Me… I’m a TOS fan. I understand that Enterprise is… not hard and fast with continuity. I like it, sometimes. It’s better than Voyager… but the whole Asteroid episode. I loved the concept. Space exploration. Great. But then they give it a full one gravity. I can live with that, it’s a technical limitation. But then they make a guy FALL DOWN and hurt himself. THEN they make the SHUTTLE FALL. They draw ATTENTION to it. Ruined it, man.
I like the imperfect universe, I like the skoogy vulcans.
I didn’t even mind the holodeck. And I liked the schoolkid pictures. But don’t eff up the science in science-oriented episodes, guys?
Oops, you may be right, i hope this doesnt cause a problem with the mods.
But i think there is no rules against speaking about file-sharing programs on the forum… i hope.
If there is a rule agaisnt it I apologize for any infraction i could have commited.
I would like to add my apologies, We’ll see “enterprise” only next year and with internet… temptation overcame us. I promise I won’t do that again. I will also post only in english.
I’m enjoying Enterprise. Compare its first season to Voyager or DS9 or even TNG (“Farpoint” - UGH!) and I already see a difference.
Esprix
I like it. Last week’s episode was a bit weak, and this week’s could have been better, but on the whole this is a much stronger start than any of the other series have ever had.
So far I’m impressed with what I’ve seen. The Human/Vulcan tension is a nice change. I know that the characters still have some developing to do (go back and watch the first season of TNG!), but, so far, I’m optimistic.

The one thing that has bothered me with Star Trek is that the writing has gotten just so damned lazy. Trek-speak drives me crazy, especially when it’s used as a cheap gimmick to get the writer out of a box he’s written himself into.
At least the original series had stories with real plots and smart resolutions. In “The Corbomite Manoever”, Kirk was outgunned and about to be destroyed, so he came up with a bluff and gave himself some breathing room to get away.
If that had been in one of the later series, it would have looked hopeless and then suddenly the engineer would say, “Wait! If we just invert the dilithium matrix and case a space-time inversion, the resulting matter flux will cause a plasma wave that will solve all our problems!”
I HATE that. And it got so bad on Star Trek that it became almost a parody of itself. And the writing was so sloppy that the writers wouldn’t even come up with the words themselves. The script would just say, “Insert Trek Tech speak here.”
I had hoped that the new series would avoid that, but now we already have the evil time-hopping people, so there’s already one mechanism in place that the writers can use to create another Deux ex Machina ending to any episode they want. That really sucks.
I like it. It’s Trek, so I’m not expecting much, but it seems the writers try a bit harder to make reasonable resolutions to the plot crises than in Voyager. I also like how humans are at the bottom of the pile. Fun. I do have a tendency to curse whenever a holodeck or time traveller shows up, though.
I have to admit the speech in last week’s episode was hysterical–“Humans work by a code, they NEVER seek revenge, blah, blah, blah.”
Slortar switches to CNN Headlines for a moment. Guffaws loudly
Yeah, I like them. They pick you up.

Oww! OK, OK, stop hitting me!
I’m thinking of the latter seasons of TNG where the characters and the plot mattered more than the technology. Whence comes character development comes good writing, methinks. Give Enterprise time (especially with Bakula at the lead).
Esprix
I’m with Esprix on this one. Give it time.
Hmmm, sort of…I keep watching in hopes it’ll improve. You might want to read the other threads on it – there’s a thread for each episode, I think. Most of the fans posting on the other threads have problems with the technology, and I can see their points, but my problem with the show is that they aren’t doing enough character development, although they made a little progress in the last one. I dislike T’Pol – her arrogrance, her stiff unemotional demeanor, and those obviously doctored fake lips. She ruins it for me, and I may give up on the show simply because of her. The best characters so far are the doctor and Trip. At least they gave the dog a bigger role this last time anyway!
They are real. Maybe it’s a birth defect.
