Star Trek: Nemesis question

It’s on again and I am watching the part where Picard decides to initiate the self-destruct sequence. Unfortunately, it’s offline.

Since the idea is to destroy the Scimitar, why not have someone fire a phaser into the warp core? (other than “the writers are hacks”, that is)

I think you answered your own question.

 Heh, heh… every other time there’s a battle, the warp core containment threatens to collapse if someone so much as sneezes. You ram the ship at full impulse into a very large object, and nothing happens.

Wasn’t there a plot-device-o-the-week once that showed a force field around the warp core, preventing just such an event?

Odd, isn’t it? Firing a phaser into a warp core filled with antimatter won’t work, but Data firing a phaser into the Romulan turn-people-into-stone weapon will blow the ship to smithereens.
