My post was a reference to The Search for Whales “James T. Kirk was no boy scout.”
Humor-it is a difficult concept. :dubious:

How do you know that? It’s not inconceivable that hoverbikes can cruise at 300 mph and need refueling only every 20,000 miles at that speed.
Search for Whales? It was Wrath of Khan!!
By golly, you are correct, Sir.
Ir was a test, and you scored admirably!
I knew that.
Just waiting for the odometer on this thread to turn over on 1000.
As you were.
Well, I’ll admit to being completely whooshed. I missed the whole “Kirk was no boy scout” comment in the WoK. In fact, I’ll cop to being doubly whooshed because I suspect now you were riffing on the word “camp” and not “campy” at all. Or am I off base?
Taken out of context, those scenes are some painful watching. Shatner does overact, but I still love him for it. And that outfit that chick has on (in the female takes over Kirk’s body show–can’t remember her name) is horrid. It adds at least 25 pounds to her figure. I also dislike that show because it shows (unlike most of the other shows) how limited in his thinking was Roddenberry. He goes for the “woman isn’t content with her lot in life so we must make her out to be crazed*” schtick. We’ve come a long way, baby on TV re that meme. And thank god.
*I realize that this chick was somewhat crazed re Kirk (aren’t they all?), but IME, it went beyond just a personal thing for her. Why couldn’t women be StarFleet captains? I’m glad they did show a female commander in future shows.
I hadn’t thought of that, but I’ll certainly take credit for it if given the chance.
We must have watched different series. Some single-episode guest stars on modern series get more character development than Rand, Chapel, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura.
Perhaps, but I didn’t say it would take a long time, only that it’s a long drive, which could have just as well meant distance. Even assuming your interpretation and your figures, though, he’s still looking at a five hour drive. That’s a hell of a lot longer than I want to be on a bike.
Perhaps you weren’t paying close attention? I pay particular attention to Nurse Chapel (this time around) well, because of me being a nurse and all. She has some subtle moments.
Uhura should get more airtime, true. I cannot stand Chekov and never could (the first few shows he has a girl’s haircut. I know they were trying to make him into the Mickey from the Monkees for ST, but it was --and I use this term advisedly–an epic fail), so the less time he spends on camera, the better for me. And Sulu is just weird to me. Every time I see him, I am reminded of his dissing of Shatner over the years. Methinks he wanted his own show. It really doesn’t matter if Shatner was a complete dick to work with or not–the show’s been over for quite some time. Get over yourself!
But I digress. I’d like to find ST the movie and see it while in Iceland, but tonight is my last night here. No clue how to find it…
I believe that was a wig while his hair grew out to look like Davy Jones from the Monkees.
That would have been cool. Star Trek: Excelsior or Star Trek: Captain Sulu, save that in the later films he seems to try and sound like Toshiro Mifuni.
Dunno who Toshiro is, but I would not have watched a show with Sulu as Captain Kangaroo, much less head of a starship. I would have watched one with Spock as captain or Uhura–that would have been cool.
A Japanese actorwho made about a million Samurai movies, including some classics that were remade into American Westerns. He spoke in a very deep voice.
I believe it was The Undiscovered Country where as Captain of Excelsior he attempts to rescue Enterprise. One of his crewmen insists, “She’ll fly apart, Sir!” and Sulu responds, “Fly her apart then! I owe my life to those men a dozen times over!” Campy, but cool.
Sulu’s no Sisko but he’s about ten times awesomer than Kirk.
I’ve always wondered if the name “Sulu” was just completely made up by Roddenberry. I’ve been into Japanese pop culture for several years and have never seen that name outside of Star Trek. It doesn’t even sound Japanese.
It’s tagalog.
Kirk lost his shirt a lot, but I never saw him skipping down the corridor with an epee’.
And thank the Great Bird for that. Nobody wanted to see his bouncing man boobs.
I think the Corvette was either a replica or a restomod. Nobody would perfectly restore a car that was several hundred years old and then add that communicator/MP3 thing.
Absolutely not. The first season of ST, (now watching as an adult heterosexual female), Kirk is hot, hot, hot. There are no man boobs–those come later, in the films, IMS. Sulu was never hot, but he was good with a sword.
I tried to go see ST in Icelandic but I’d need a car to get to the ONE theater it’s playing at. <sigh>
Like Cho Chang for Rowling–it’s not Chinese (the Cho part). Was Sulu supposed to be Japanese? I never really thought about it…
