About the Uhura/Spock thing, I read an interesting review that included the following. I was of course too much “…wait, Uhura and Spock?” to pick up on this, but it’s a pretty good point.

Uhura confronts Spock about her ship assignment (not to the Enterprise) and he comments that he recommended another ship so as to avoid the appearance of favoritism. That comment doesn’t make much sense at that stage in the film, because we do not know the nature of their relationship yet. Hence the subtlety. But later on we learn that there is indeed a personal, romantic relationship between Uhura and Spock, and she used it to leverage her way onto the Enterprise. The film also notes that Spock was one of her instructors, which raises the issue of personal relationships between teachers and students, which are almost always considered inappropriate. Again, Abrams is being subtle here by tucking it in at an earlier stage when we do not know the relationship exists, but when you step back and look at the bigger picture, there are a lot of things concerning about the relationship between Spock and Uhura, and which would raise eyebrows in classrooms and workplaces alike.

I actually argued that point with a colleague. I liked the relationship between them, but their entire relationship is completely inappropiate and unprofessional, and them kissing on the transporter pad with their captain right beside them was one of the scenes that took me entirely out of the film.

I don’t care how emotionally compromised Spock is, I just can’t believe a professional military person (Vulcan) would do that.

Plus I don’t think either of them really thought he’d be coming back.

I agree that their being lovers is inappropriate becuase of the student-teacher thing, as I said upthread. But I doubt Abrams gives a fuck about things like that, any more than he cares about believable career paths for New!Kirk.

That actually counted against her, in the end, as Spock didn’t like the way they treated the Troglytes. But initially he was interested in her as “a work of art” (Spock’s exact words!). Then they went on to discuss Vulcan mating practices.
