I know that Romulans are just Vulcans in need of some Prozac, but are humans related to Vulcans in any way?
I think there was a TNG episode which made it explicit that all humanoid species in the galaxy owe their existance to the genetic manipulation of their respective primordial species by a single race of advanced humanoid aliens who have since become extinct.
Actually, what’s it something like seventeen? Which, of course, kind of spoojes everything since we’ve seen a WHOLE lot more than that…

I should have added: I’m guessing it was a deliberate attempt to legitimize the fact that virtually all Trek aliens look suspiciously like humans plastered with latex prostheses. I doubt very much that the above explanation had been conceived of during TOS. The look of aliens then simply reflected the budgetary and technological constraints of the medium. You either had people with funny ears or you had…the Horta.
No idea! Say…what is the official count of humanoid species?
IIRC in that ep Dr Crusher checks DNA samples for all of the species on board the Enterprise for additional matches (including several crew members whose planets aren’t members of the Federation, which, why would you let them serve aboard the Federation flagship or anywhere else in Starfleet, so that’s really stupid, but I digress) and found no additional matches. Which argues against Vulcans being one of the races who were seeded. There were Romulans featured in the ep but I don’t think it was ever stated that Romulan DNA was in the mix.
yeah, but that doesn’t prove they wern’t seeded, just that they wern’t chosen for the puzzle. I had gottern the feeling that all humanoid races had been seeded, but only a few were chosen for the dna computer program. They had some sort of three dimensional space puzzle that allowed them to find the last dna-encoded planet.
Don’t forget the Bajorans, they had clitorises (clitori?) on their foreheads. I’m sure someone has a slash story on the web about Ro Laren getting licked between the eyes.
Respec’ mah google-fu!
Anyway, The Chase
Seems it goes for all humanoids. Anyway, Romulans, Cardassians, and Klingons alike are disgusted by the notion (hence, they have something to be disgusted about, i.e., their genetic link). Ergo, humans are related this way to Vulcans.
You’re saying immigrants shouldn’t be allowed to serve in the military because they are necessarily beholden to their former potentates? That’s absurd.

Given the number of alien conspiracies to overthrow the Federation that cropped up in Next Gen, yeah, I think it’s a bad idea to allow non-Federation personnel to serve aboard Federation ships.
There’s a flaw in that argument. They never enumerated all of the planets for which they already had codes for, although they mentioned a few, including earth.
So, if one of the codes that they already had was Vulcan, then Vulcans serving on the Enterprise would not be ‘an additional match’. In fact, given that they had so far found only genetic codes that were species-wide and only one to a planet, they wouldn’t have bothered testing Vulcans.
Also, the ‘testing crew members’ was only done on non-federation crew members (digression noted,) because the ship’s computers already had full genome data for federation member species.
