Although I suspect it would be far beyond Lucas’ screenwriting abilities it would be possible to have episode 3 work for those of us seeing it now, and for later generations watching in chronological order. We see Anakin go further and further over the edge, he dissapears in some sort of accident while Padme is pregnant- Vader appears, does some bad stuff, Padme hides the children (without revealing their names to the audience ala “little Boba”). End of episode 3. Vader’s identity would be more easily guessed, but not having heard Yoda’s teachings some of the audience still might be surprised.
In much the same way that the “chronological” version of The Godfather that was shown on TV still works as an interesting story, or how the restaurant scene in The 6th Sense picks up additional resonance the second time you see it.
However, Lucas will be too busy trying to please the fanboy audience to do this.
I meant by Anakin going further and further over the edge, kind of a Mad Max like fall from grace. The audience should hate Anakin’s enemies, and be on his side to an extent as the rage builds up.
I want a seventh episode, discarding all the stuff established in the books and comics set after Jedi, in which Luke finally bows to the pressure of his genetic inheritance and becomes the galaxy’s most evil big guy in a cape.
It kinda disturbs me that newer editions of the Narnia books are numbered in chronological order (with The Magician’s Nephew first, IIRC), so any kids I have will see the SW movies in the order in which they were made. Seems to me it’s the same principle…
