I wonder if in 6 or 12 months there will - like LOTR - be a longer Director’s Cut / Extended Edition?
It was long overdue in this thread, admit it.
No way. Disney will never admit that there was anything but the theatrical cut. At most, there will be some deleted scenes on the Deluxe Gold-Packaged Mortgage Your Kids Box Set DVD (Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital).
Why not?
No. I can’t find it, but Abrams was asked the other day. He said he doesn’t believe in extending or altering the cut after it hits theaters. He doesn’t want to give the impression that the theatrical release was anything but the full version.
He had final cut rights, by the way. Disney could not edit past his final decision.
Because “improved” versions of Star Wars films always work out so well.
Seriously - for better or for worse, I want my SW set in stone. No special editions, please.
Because I had believed some earlier internet rumors that Disney had interfered with Abrams on the movie. In looking it up to provide a cite, I see multiple articles where JJ says that wasn’t the case. On the other hand though, if Disney DIDN’T interfere, then why would he need a separate cut? What you saw WAS the Director’s Cut.
Or what Mahaloth said. :smack:
Just saw it for the second time. Seemed to go by much quicker the second time.
I noticed the first line was “This is the first step towards making things right” Perhaps a dig at the prequels?
I also noticed a lot more lens flare this time. Probably seven or eight times.
Paid a lot of attention to when Ren was told BB8 got away. He was told the droid got away with FN2187. Ren then destroyed the wall with his lightsaber. He then said “any more” and was told there was a girl. He then pull the guy to him and held him by the throat and screamed “what girl”
Also noticed Kylo Ren’s first line to Rey was “Ah, The girl I’ve heard so much about” So is that a reference to the one line above, or does he know a lot more about her?
Also wondering why Luke’s hand lost all of its skin.
Probably got all ratty after however many years on Space Ireland and Luke decided to hell with keeping it looking nice. Yoda and Obi Wan both had to put up with a lot worse in their respective exiles.
Yep–came here just to say this.
But all in all, it felt like I was 15 again, in 1977–except better. I loved the similarities to ‘A New Hope’, and the differences felt like improvements. It made me wish that Episodes I-III didn’t exist, though.
I made the same whispered “'Tis but a flesh wound” joke to my teenage son, who chortled.
Preach it, friend!
I saw it again today and have some thoughts on Rey:
-
When Kylo Ren first meets Rey he says “the girl I’ve heard so much about”. Does that mean anything? It seems an odd thing to say given that in the movie Kylo only hears about her in connection with BB-8.
-
Leia and Rey have an emotional hug when Rey returns from Starkiller but this is the first time they meet in the movie. The movie makes it seem like they already know each other.
-
The movie makes a point of showing how important it is to find Luke and when the Resistance finally finds his location they send…Rey? Alone (i.e. without another member of the Resistance).
It could just be a sloppy story line but it seems like there are bits of the story we aren’t being told. Does anybody have thoughts on this?
I haven’t seen much speculation on who the old guy on Jakku is, why he had the piece of the map, and why the Resistance knows to go to him to fetch it.
His name is Lor San Tekka*. He is supposedly an old member of the Rebel Alliance from the pre-Death Star days, and is possibly going to turn up in younger form in either the animated series Star Wars Rebels or the new prequel “Anthology” movie Rogue One due out next year. Or then again, perhaps he isn’t, and his mystery and significance will be preserved for a while yet. Apparently one of the new novels has something about him following “The Church of the Force”, whatever that is.
*Note his name has the same rhythm as Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui Gon Jinn
Did C3P0 get his gold arm back at the end? I mean the very, very end. When Rey and Chewbacca take off to go see Luke on the Millennium Falcon, he waves to them. Does he have his gold arm back in that one scene?
I haven’t had time to read the entire thread before I go to sleep, so apologies if this has been addressed, but despite the fact I loved the movie, one basic mistake bugged me. Light sabers can only be deflected with another light saber or electrostaff (cite, but when Fin was fighting the storm trooper, the former was deflecting the light saber with his blaster.
Saw it last Monday and while it was good, very good even, I couldn’t help but think the whole time that it all just seemed… unnecessary. At no point have I ever gotten to the end of Jedi and asked, “And then what happened?”
This does not mean I did not enjoy it immensely, I did, nor does it mean I will not enthusiastically look forward to the forthcoming installments, but still…
There may not be a Director’s Cut, but you can be sure that longer versions of the film exist. Its a normal part of the editing process to initially have longer versions of scenes then tighten every thing up bit by but, including dropping entire scenes for the sake of good pacing.
Given that Disney want to make back every cent out of their investment I fully expect an extended version to be released at some point. I would bet there are scenes explaining quite a few things that don’t make much sense at the moment. Along similar lines I’m convinced the only reason for C-3PO’s red arm is so that they can sell a new toy which is visually distinctive from the old C-3PO figures. There seems no other purpose to it that I can see.
Blaster? The scene I remember had the Stormtrooper using what looked like a baton to deflect the light saber. The baton appeared to have a field around it, like an electrostaff, so maybe each Stormtrooper battalion has one trooper trained to use a baton if a Jedi were to show up.
Frank Sinatra dropped it off.
