I’m not a huge fan of the program (though it did virtually eliminate a social problem people used to take for granted and are now barely aware ever existed), but I can’t quite see how this is true. The challenge SS faces is twofold: the baby boomer hump, and the fact that Republicans have been raiding the funds like crazy. But even with the second problem, the system really only needs a minor influx of money to get over the baby boomer hump… at which point the crisis is basically over. And even if there IS no influx of money, the system can still ride through the crisis with inevtiable benefit cuts.
In other words, while I support shifting the system over to one of private insurance, the administration is basically being dishonest about the long term viability of the system. The problem with the system is that it takes from the young and gives to the old, which makes no real sense when you think about it, especially since some of us will never get a chance to be old, but everyone who is old had a chance to be young.
It strikes me as funny. The “Star Wars” defense system will probably go down in history along with the Maginot Line in being ass-backwards wastes of money and energy that were outdated before they were even constructed.
Living under a delusion is todays reality for all who voted for Bush and hence the state of being of a majority of the electorate (and I include here all who were too lazy to even go to vote)
I didn’t made a study of this failed war toy of the US, but if it is designed to intercept what come towards Holy US Land through the air… Then I say it must be designed to react rather unholy quickly when it comes to intercept missiles fired towards God’s Chosen Nation from submarines who in stealth mode sneaked closely to US shores.
I just wonder who Bush thinks is going to be firing ICBM’s at us. Russia? China? I thought we were all getting along pretty well lately. As I understand it, we’re supposed to be at “war” with terrorists living in caves. Where the hell are they gonna get an ICBM?
As long as we are fighting wandering groups of nomad lunatics, my guess is that any nuclear attack is more likely to be delivered in a suitcase than in a modified rocket. And what use is Star Wars against any weapon that these terrorists are likely to deploy? No use at all.
Needless to say, I’m not crazy about Social Security, but if we’re intent on keeping it, I’m perfectly okay with taking the Star Wars money for that. But really, Star Wars is just wasteful silliness. I say we take money from something that is actively doing harm to people of every color in every state of the country: The goddamn motherfucking War On Drugs, aka the War On People. Who knows, maybe putting that money into SS might do some good. At least, we wouldn’t be spending our money waging war against our own citizens.
