Starbound beta release - Intergalactic Terraria

I made a villager once. He got himself killed by the local monsters. Seems kinda pointless.

All right, thanks all. I just thought there was going to be a way to quickly refine fuel for my ship or sumthin. Mining a thousand coal sounds like it would be tedious.

You can smelt unrefined wood to make coal, but it’s still kind of a drag. There are better fuel sources than coal in the late game, though.

I did not know that! Thanks!

I figured there were…

That’s what you get for not making guards.

Are the guards actually effective?

Never tried making guards so I don’t know how they’re equipped but the ones that come with generated villages do fine. One helped me take down the bone dragon.

Created villages will definitely be more useful later. The finished game will allow players multiple sources of income, not only the selling of items that have been plundered or farmed but also the building of villages and charging rent!

Whoa. Poison rain! (I would say “acid rain” but it has no effect on structures. :))

At least it’s not meteorites. My first character got killed twice before leaving her first planet by those things.

Note to self: stay away from Level 9 planets until better equipped!

Volcanic and Magma planets are currently bugged. Here’s a mod to fix them.

Filling the tank is 500 coal but all you really need is enough to get to the next planet you feel like exploring:

1 coal to go between objects orbiting a planet (including the planet itself).
25 coal to go between objects orbiting the same sun (right click to zoom out).
100 coal to go between objects in the same sector or travel between sectors (right click to zoom out again).

You should have more coal than you know what to do with by the time you upgrade to a gold pick. Once you’re up to using uranium for fuel, you still need coal to combine with metals and make torches.

That was not the experience I had two weeks ago. It cost me 50 or 60 units of fuel (and 1 coal gave 1 fuel unit) to go from the starting planet to an asteroid belt in the same star system. One way.

You likely were playing a version from before the fuel efficiency was increased and using wood (1:1) instead of coal (1:2). There’s also uranium (1:4), plutonium (1:6), and solarium (1:8).

A heads up; they just released the new patch. And they say that we can expect “near daily” updates from now on.

And something broke my Avian in Sector X. Attempting to load her crashes the game.

They introduced a container bug in the latest hotfix, and are telling people to make backups if they haven’t started playing since the patch.

Yeah, I lost my Ship’s locker that way, and all the neat stuff I had in there.

'Nother good mod to recommend: Variety is the spice of the Universe. More weather, biomes, and planet types!

Haven’t tried it with Dungeoneer Dungeons so I don’t know if they work together.

Would people mind stopping by Alpha Lapine 550 VII at -31030119, 73677683? I’m curious if others see an unoccupied village as well, the eastern entrance of which should be visible from the spawn point.
