Bethesda added a rover in August. Pay 25K to a ship technician in any large port (e.g.: New Atlantis, Akila City, Neon) and you won’t have to walk as much.
ETA: Your active companion can even comment on your driving skills.

I don’t know how to explain it, but Outer Worlds felt a bit like playing a flowchart. It was like, look at all these dialog choices! But none of the choices meant anything because I felt no connection to the characters and the story.
What’s the state of POI mods? I’ve always thought if a mod added a hundred or so POIs it would make the game a lot less repetitive.

Getting there. The rover update added built-in support for adding a large number of POI mods.
Oh, turns out that somebody has been looking into making existing POIs less repetitive. Still in Alpha so far.
A randomizer to alter placement of mobs and their behavior might be of interest.
Added a couple of mods that increase POI density (Planet POI and Creature Density Increased & Extremely High Human POI Density) and another mod which adds variety (The Grindfield- a GRiNDTerra mod, which requires Into the Grindfield - GRiNDTerra Framework Mod).
All should be available via both Nexus and Creation Club. I don’t know if they have anything to do with the Civilian Outpost that I stopped by on Kreet after clearing out those pirates but that place doesn’t quite look like anything I’ve seen before.
No clue what that structure in the foreground is but it’s absolutely huge!
Batten’s Shipwrecks (POIs) adds a variety of crashed ships, some of which are populated. I just ran across one next to one of those domed hab structures, outside of which are a UC Vanguard pilot and a Freestar Security pilot ragging on each other.
If you try the free expansion module “At Hell’s Gate” from the Creation Club, good luck. The third location on Mars never spawns for me and I’m not the only one. Tried uninstalling the mod, exiting to desktop, and reinstalling to restart the quest. Didn’t help any.
At least it’s free.

I completed it with no problem on Xbox. It was pretty fun and I loved the rewards.
The non-appearing plasma facility appears to be primarily a PC thing but some Xbox users have reported it as well.
