What’s eery is mlees is a coworker and the town where my dad lives just outside of, Chickasha, was hit by a couple of tornadoes a week or so ago. I’m guessing God does not approve of our job choices.
I hope everyone is Ok and still has a home after this.
Ok, thanks. I was more worried about damage to his house. He’s 68, and now on a fixed income. I can’t imagine too many folks in Springfield had tornedo coverage on their homes…
You’re welcome. Hopefully, if he has damage, his policy is one that covers it. We own but I have no clue if our policy covers it. I’d imagine the mortgage company would insist that it be covered. I suppose we should probably find out, just in case this ever happens again.
Aw, dammit … This is the first I’ve heard of that. Hope Jim’s Fly-In Diner is still OK.
Well, I should hope so.
One station last night had an interview with a truck driver who had stopped in W. Springfield. He kept telling how people kept telling him to get his ass inside, but he kept saying “Hell no, I wanna watch this!”. Lucky he made it.
Yes. A couple of cases happened where tenants did damage to their apartment (fire damage), and the land lord had to eat the costs. So now, the property manager requires us to carry something. I am protected, and so is my land lord. It was cheaper than I expected.
On the tornado front, my dad and my brother only saw lots of rain. My sister had a tree branch crash through the roof (renting a three story house). No one hurt, thank goodness. But my dad says it was exciting watching everything unfold on the news.
My step-mom recommended the WWLP.com website for more photos of the Massachusetts tornado damage.
I haven’t been able to find anything specifically about the diner but the article that mentions the airport says the airport is in ruins. That doesn’t sound good for the diner.
According to this message board, it sounds like the diner didn’t make it. This guys says it looks like it survived but three hours later says nothing’s left but the runway.
Thanks for that - there’s a photo of the diner, second from the bottom. Maybe that’s rebuildable - looks like the restored Fifties diner part is intact, maybe with some holes, even if the deck is gone. Poor Jim.
You could taxi right up and park right next the building, usually with some excited kids there (with indulgent or aviation-minded adults, of course) there to watch the “ai’pwanes” fly. I remember being one of those kids, though elsewhere, and I always try to help encourage their interest. But now there’s one less place to do it.
Fun fact: The Western MA emergency command post is in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
I haven’t had a chance to eat there. We were going to try to get there this summer. If it’s fixable, we’ll definitely be up there. I’ve heard that the food is great and I know my boyfriend would enjoy the airplanes.
The footage I’ve seen on TV shows the planes flipped over and into the foliage on the side. I saw destroyed buildings. I’m not sure the diner is among them, but wouldn’t be surprised.
