State some controversial beliefs that you have.

Hardly controversial. Who doesn’t?

Get some balls and pick a real bone! And if you happen to be a male yourself, that would be controversial!

I believe that abortion is not truly “free” unless anti-babies, pregnancy and birth are free too. (I put the bar at raising the kid, but the thing is, if you don’t want to/can’t afford to have the kid, you should be able to give it away without having to pay hospital bills first; and if you don’t want to/can’t afford to have kids and have foresight, you should be able to get anti-babies that aren’t post-pregnancy)

I believe humanity will never make it off this rock, and will never colonise the galaxy or whatever, and I believe it doesn’t matter at all that this is the case. The universe will not mourn our demise.

Commit genocide. You needn’t look hard to find plenty of it in human history or (small pox blankets, anyone?) or contemporary events (any Westerners care to intervene in Darfur? no? hm), so I object to people treating such actions as nonhuman.

Personally, I wouldn’t go as far as this - I think Hitler had some qualities that not many people have. However, I would say this about, say, common terrorists. I think environment can drive normal people to ‘evil’ acts more easily than most people are comfortable with.

Let’s see, what else… I think the idea that someone can deserve to suffer isn’t really logically coherent, and the justice system shouldn’t be in the business of inflicting punishment/revenge on anyone. If we’re locking people up because we can’t fix them and they’re hurting others, that’s one thing, but their suffering is a necessary evil, not a bonus. I can certainly understand the instinct for revenge, but I don’t think that’s reason enough to make it law.

Somewhat related to the above: I think free will is… well, bizarre. I don’t think it exists, but it’s more than that - I’m beginning to suspect that I’m misunderstanding the concept, because it seems to me so totally nonsensical that I don’t get why so many people believe in it.

I think that IQ is meaningful. I don’t think it covers anything like the majority of brain function, and there’s plenty of room for someone with a high IQ to do something utterly stupid (and vice versa). But I think a high IQ indicates a bit more than simply an affinity for a certain kind of puzzle.

I think that the connection between wealth/success and hard work certainly exists, but that it is often overstated. I think that it is overstated largely because people don’t like to think that all the suffering they see is undeserved (whatever that means - see above).

And finally: I find women more attractive in pyjamas than in sexy underwear. Actually, screw it - this is meant to be controversial. I don’t find this, I state it as an objective fact, and if you disagree, you’re a horribly stunted individual and there’s something dreadfully wrong with you. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s my list: [ul]
[li]Anyone who listens to 2step Garage (it’s a limey thing) is, as a matter of verifiable objective fact, thicker than a sack of wet cement. No, no, no, cease your internal dialogue Truesteppers. You’re idiots. You should be beaten with sticks.[/li]
[li]If I could wave a magic wand and rid the world of either rape or religion, I’d choose religion in a nanosecond.[/li]
[li]I’m all for corporal punishment for young violent offenders. Semi-literate, tracksuit clad chav scumbags would learn far more from a sound beating than 120 hours community service with other chav scumbags. Seriously. Let’s do it as a trial period. You get fifty grubby little chav tealeafs and I get fifty. You put 'em through a few days painting railings, I put 'em through ten minutes in the ring with this snarling motherfucker, and after six months we’ll see which group has the higher recidivism rate.[/li]
[li] Terminally God-boggled fundamentalist Muslims, who loudly take to London’s streets declaiming against Western values with placards like “Exterminate those who slander Islam” should be permanently exiled from the UK. If that means dumping them on some radiation saturated South Pacific atoll, so be it. They’re total cunts and they deserve it. When they can glow in the dark, maybe, they can be allowed to leave. But not before.[/li]
Prior to exile, they should also be forced to spend ten minutes in the ring with the Sumo wrestler.[/ul]

[ul]
[li]People who forget to close their ‘list’ tags should be dealt with violently[/li][/ul]

Could a kindly mod please insert the [/list] tage at the end of my previous post? Thanks.

It is also worth noting that I came to all of the above opinions without once consulting the Daily Mail

I’ve reported the post to bring it to the attention of a mod.

I hope they ban you.

No, really.

Well, not really.

I believe, based on personal experience, that human beings are not necessarily born concious and self-aware, but instead may achieve conciousness and self-awareness years after they are born.

I believe that Steve Irwin was murdered as a result of a conspiracy between his wife and John Stainton. Their motive was Irwin’s increasing desire to to turn his activities towards hard research and away from money making ventures such as his TV show and Australia Zoo. The idea being to use his daughter as a PR diversion while the whole thing settled down.

I believe State of Origin Rugby League is fixed to always ensure the team winning Game One loses Game Two.

I’m interested.

“What might save us, me and you, is if the Russians love their children too”?

Let’s see:
The world can do without nation-states, religion or capitalism.
Anarchism is the best form of government, but the world isn’t ready. It will be one day, though.
More genetic modification, nano-engineering & AI research are needed.
Space Elevators are a pipe dream
Nuclear waste is not as bad as you think. I wouldn’t eat the stuff, but it’s perfectly safe if handled and stored properly.
The internal combustion engine in a private vehicle is one of the greatest threats to all our futures.
The American Dream is vastly inferior to the Euro Dream, the latter isn’t even a century old and needs time to blossom.
It is perfectly possible to get along with Muslims, even those of a fundamentalist stripe. Most Westerners just don’t want to. I suspect part of the reason is residual religious conflict.

The thing that worries me is how many of the points in this thread I find myself nodding in agreement with.

My own Controversial Beliefs:

  • Imperialism and Colonialism were (and are) good and desireable things. The world would be a lot better off if Britain, France, Spain, and Holland still ran things.

  • Stupidity should be a crime- either get smart or get punished. The police would be empowered to issue on-the-spot fines for minor offences, like holding up the line in chain restaurants because you don’t know what to order, with more serious offences (wilfully repeating urban legends as truth or deliberately spreading rumours known to be untrue) carrying a Transportation sentence of varying time lengths.

  • Transportation (as punishment) should be be reintroduced. Pick somewhere that no-one cares about- Say, Tasmania- and (re)establish a penal colony there. . If they behave themselves, they can come back to society at the end of the sentence.

  • Women under the legal age of consent should not dress provocatively, regardless of the current fashion trends.

  • Cellular phones and their proliferation in modern society is a good thing. People probably complained about Fire and The Wheel back in the day too, but that didn’t make them right.

  • The current period in history is one of the best times thus far to be alive- provided you live in a first world country.

  • Everyone should have the right to live in whatever country they please, unless there is a compelling reason (not “Confidential Issues Of National Security” as to why they should not be allowed.

  • Anyone moving to a foreign country should make an effort to learn that country’s language and culture.

  • Democracy doesn’t work, but it is better than the alternatives thus far.

That’s all I should really say for now, lest you all think I’m some sort of extremist…

I think diggleblop needs to stop starting so many fucking threads, get a fucking job, and pay his fucking child support.

For every Doper here who has posted more than one controversial belief, I believe I agree with at least one of them!

Hydrox Cookies are vastly superior to Oreos.

I believe that all laws should expire after a reasonable period – twenty years or so. The ones worth keeping could be re-enacted (there would be no special “renewal” procedure; the replacement law would be treated exactly like a brand-new one).

I believe that abuse of animals should be punished much more severely than it is now, because it’s one of the surest available indications for dangerous sociopathy. (People conform to the requirements of living in civilized society because of the internal voice of conscience, or because they fear punishment. When the former is absent, the latter needs to be cranked up to 11 to compensate.)

I believe that net taxpayers should have more say over the government than net tax recipients.

I believe there has to be a better system than Capitalism, but I’m not 100% sure what it is - so I’m sticking with Socialism for now.

I believe that a system that pays me many times what my friend who is a nurse earns, when my job has absolutely no societal benefit, is ridiculous & obscene.

I believe in the British TV licence and central funding for the BBC.

I believe everyone involved in marketing & advertising should be killed*, particularly direct mailers. Also those involved in advertising who call themselves ‘creatives’ are fucking deluded.

I believe that, while I’m an athiest, if anyone decided to deify David Attenborough I’d be sorely tempted to join.

I believe that Newcastle United Football Club should have bought another striker & two defenders in the summer transfer window.

I believe in the instatement of central funding for political parties and the banning of anything but the most basic lobbying. Politicians and Civil Servants should not

I believe that a Labour Party that supports PFI & faith schools is an insult to the Labour movement.

I believe that the conference all I’m currently on will not end well.
*OK, OK, probably just a really bad Chinese burn, but you get the idea.

You’re missing the word ‘controversial’ in the thread title.
