State some controversial beliefs that you have.

I beleive very very few people are overweight for reasons that are beyond their own control.

I beleive that the Reader has given up on the sdmb, and is just keeping it going with minimal investment of time and money for so long as subscription money comes in. If they just shut it down, there would be problems in having to refund existing subscription holders. It will keep going with worse and worse servvice until noone resubscribes and it grinds to a hault or until a major piece of hardware fails.

I hope my above belief is wrong.

I believe that people who say people facing infertility should just adopt would collapse into a quivering heap if they themselves were infertile.

I believe access to IVF should be considered basic health care but only to those of a certain age and not on welfare.

I agree with those who believe that there ought to be an IQ test before you can become a parent.

I believe all cats and babies are inherently beautiful.

I believe that people who are against national health care are against it because they are either stupid or ill informed.

I believe that some people simply cannot lose weight no matter how hard they try.

I believe that most really rich people are really rich because they do things most people would consider immoral or unthinkable.

I believe that those leftists who defend perpetually Islam as a harmless religion of peace would kill themselves if they had to live in an Islamic country.

I believe Islam remains the greatest threat to world peace today. Right now Islam is for arrogant male supremicists and very dumb women. Women who put on the veil look like property and deserve to be treated that way. If Muslims want respect they should stop putting women in jail in Pakistan because they’ve been raped, stop holding holocaust denial exhibits in Iran, stop supporting genocidal maniacs like Hamas and Hezbollah and grow the fuck up already. Until there’s a huge change any rational person is fully justified in fearing and hating Islam.

I believe this entire thread sounds like an amusing variant SDMB version of a Heinlein novel.

OK, now this thread has gone too far.

I believe that a substantial number of beliefs expressed in this thread exemplify naivety, a failure to think things through, or sheer blooming idiocy. But I would be hard pressed to tell which ones.

I believe that the CIA is responsible for the creation and dissemination of crack cocaine.

I believe that the Apollo moon landings were filmed in Hollywood.

I believe that the wages of sin are not death but are instead nontaxable and are paid in cash.

I believe that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him mow your lawn.

I would collapse in a quivering heap of gratitude.

I believe the children are the future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.

I see we are in the Pit, I believe the Op said controversial, not completely whacked and stupid.
As your others appear to be cryptic jokes, are you just **trolling ** or do you believe any of the crap you just posted?

Jim

I think Der Trihs is one of the least offensive Dopers. I don’t agree with him on every point, but he is remarkably bullshit-free. I like people who aren’t willing to tone down the discourse below a level actually appropriate to the subject. In other words, I think talking about war and religion like they were tea and crumpets is nothing but circle-jerking, and it offends me much more than intentionally inflammatory rhetoric.

The fact is that “support the troops” – unless used more logically to suggest they should come home – means “I want American troops to kill Iraqis”. Because most people think through an enormous filter of bullshit, they have sort of whitewashed this fact out of the discussion. Some people are fine with it, because they think it’s important to support the home team. I believe those people should be immediately sent to the front.

People have a right to food. I’m disgusted by how many Dopers apparently disagree. I think of them all as less than human. Anyone who has more than they need and doesn’t give to the hungry in some way is less than human in my book. I would still feed them if they were hungry, though.

I don’t vote. I feel it’s my civic duty. The two-party system is destroying this country. Look at you all, bickering and squabbling over this petty partisan bullshit. You should be fucking ashamed of yourselves. I think we’d be much better served by a 100% non-turnout than a 100% turnout. I might vote one day, but there has yet to be a candidate I agree with.

I like furries and otherkin just fine. Freaks of all kinds, really. Life is too fucking short to waste on being boring. Yeah, some of them are nuts. You know what I think is nuts? Go stand on a subway platform at rush hour in Manhattan and watch how people will literally cram themselves into the biomass-stuffed subway cars so they won’t be five minutes late for work. That’s fucking crazy. Bunny ears and fairy wings are just silly. Silly is not so bad.

Most people are bisexual to some degree. If our society was accepting of it, it would be the norm. It probably will be someday – certainly by the time we can all go mix and match gender at will in the Nanosex booths on the corner.

Online interactions are just as real as in-person ones. It is possible to truly know and be friends with someone you have only met online, or spoken to on the phone, or exchanged letters with. These relationships are equally valuable and valid to flesh-based ones. Someday no one will be left who questions this. Probably by the time our robots are greeting intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy.

Many posters here are like old fighters who come to rely on their size to intimidate people, and get out of shape as a result – except here, it’s intellectual flab. They’re used to thinking of themselves as smart, and so they get mentally lazy. I am also guilty of this sometimes.

I love everybody, even the stupid assholes I can’t fucking stand.

Jesus, there’s been some crazy shit posted in this thread, but this one really takes the cake.

I believe the human male is the cause of a majority of the world’s problems. However, I also believe they provide a majority of the solutions.

Even though I don’t always agree with Ensign Edison, and occasionally wish to give him a good smacking (one situation where an online relationship and an face-to-face one are of decidedly different quality :)), he’s been my favorite poster since I was on the SDMB long enough to notice or care.

Is that controversial?

I believe that these types of beliefs, however irrational, are core to the individual making them. I believe that they can’t be untaught, dissuaded, or debated into any ‘enlightened’ change. I believe that even if you debate, berate, or publicly abuse the individual holding such core beliefs, they will never ever change their mind, even if eventually they do raise a white flag. Given that premise, I share the rest of my controversial beliefs:

I believe should the incompetence of the present administration remain unchanged, the US will fall to revolution/civil war/and or destruction by the combined military forces of the entire rest of the globe within 50 years.

I believe that a nuclear bomb will be detonated on US soil (as an attack or just made to look like an attack) within 10 years.

I believe that the government will try to introduce internment camps again within our lifetime.

I believe that 100 years from now, when history looks back on the people alive in America today, they will be seen as stupid and ignorant people if only because of the people to whom we so blindly and apathetically entrusted the power to rule. There will be a nickname for us synonymous with either ‘Lemmings’, ‘dog-shit’ or ‘greed’, and we will be hated by future generations of our own people for the myriad of hardships and disasters that we could have prevented, but didn’t.

I believe the wealthy have profited far more from our society than the poor, and thus should have to pay a much larger percentage of their income in taxes.

I believe that everybody whose income falls below a certain point should have access to free healthcare, childcare, and education.

I believe that if a school needs to cut their budget, sports should be the first to go.

I believe welfare should have time limits imposed on it, and failure to actively seek employment or education should result in revocation of welfare benefits.

I’d never wish to outlaw abortion, but I hate the idea of it, and I lose a lot of respect for those who have them (except in certain circumstances such as rape, incest, birth control failure not due to user error, impending death of the mother, or severe birth defects). I believe it’s a necessary evil, though, because we live in a world where a lot of people are fucking stupid, and stupid people aborting their babies is better than stupid people having babies.

I believe stem cell research should be pursued aggressively.

Sex belongs only in a relationship of love or at least closeness and mutual affection. That relationship can be between a man and a woman, two men, two women, two women and a man, or any permutation (excepting animals and children), but dammit, you should love or at least at least know very well the people you get it on with.

Sex education DOES belong in schools, and it needs to be thorough and accurate and include extensive birth control information. Teenagers are going to have sex, and no amount of abstinence education is going to prevent that. Birth control should be free and easily obtainable.

I believe that if two people produce a child, both have equal responsibility in providing for that child. Fathers should absolutely be responsible for child support. You don’t want a child? Use a condom or don’t have sex. The condom broke and she doesn’t want an abortion? Too bad. You should have talked that stuff out before having sex. Accept the consequences of your actions.

I believe that the abbreviations used and perpetuated in instant messaging and some email messages are ruining our ability to teach children how to write, and within a few generations we’ll all be splng lk ths.

I believe that the wealthy should be taxed at the same rate as every other income level- why be penalized because you worked hard and achieved greater financial success than others?

I believe a college education should not be available to anyone who wants one. The world needs ditch diggers too.

I believe marijuana should be legalized and regulated, and nicotine cigarettes should be outlawed.

I believe everyone who hates lawyers should be unfairly accused of something and forced to defend themselves in court.

[Crash Davis]I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.[/CD]

I am not sure if this is controversial, but I believe that this is the most eye-opening (not to mention entertaining) thread I have ever read on the SDMB.

That should be everyone.

Hey, John Titor is back!

Seconded.

Not a Whitney fan, eh?

Granted, I fluffed the lyric a bit.

(unless you’re whooshing, of course)
