Sorry for the art-history hijack, but why, exactly, is Lady Liberty traditionally depicted with a boob hanging out? Some kind of “nurturing the nascent nation” motherhood thing? I’d never really thought about it before now.
Ah. Now I remember where I’ve seen that pose before. Heck with the dog’s leash and a thumb’s up; what she really needs is a grocery bag with a baguette and some celery sticking out of the top.
The female in the statue looks a tad anorexic, and the pose could be a bit better, but other than that, there’s nothing particularly offensive about it IMO.
I’m a bit more offended that the senator took the focus off what this was supposed to be (a memorial to female veterans) and used it to do a little politicking for herself.
Maybe they should have put a dismembered penis in one hand, the matching sack in the other, and the butcher knife that removed them could be in her teeth…
Plus, and this just might be me, I’d never look at that and think “ah, women in wartime” nor “Lady Liberty.” But instead “What is that supposed to be?” which makes it more of an artistic failure than offensive.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Betty Crocker in bronze flanked on her right by Betty Crocker as Davie Crockett and on the left by Betty Crocker as The Terminator.
That sucker is unattractive, awkward and lacking in any significant aesthetic content. Don’t you just love committee selected public art? Try comparing this to the monument to Col Shaw and the 52d(?) Mass in front of the Statehouse in Boston, or the Vietnam Memorial (less representational statuary) or even to the Grant Monument on the Mall in front of the Capitol (the artillery gun team all falling down in a pile).
This sucker is just about as pedestrian and unimaginative as they come. I’ve seen GAR monuments (the volunteer at rest, the volunteer alert, the volunteer clearing his throat, the volunteer picking his nose, etc) that are more moving and attractive.
Yes, and what’s with that scarf draped around and over her arms? Seems unmilitary, and would be a nuisance for someone so busy carrying a torch or whatever.
