Steam having gigantic summer sale

Yeah and it just has all sorts of moments that just crack me up.

Like we were playing tonight on a robbery map. One team has to bring a keg of gunpowder to the other team’s safe to blow it open, and then pick up the gold and take it back to their base. The powder kegs are funny - whenever they’re shot they light on fire and about 3 seconds later explode. It gives you a little time to throw them so you can try to hit someone else in the face, but sometimes you end up accidentally blowing up your teammates.

So anyway, there was a point on the map where the robbing side could drop the powder keg through a hole in the roof to blow up the vault. Except… one of the guys on a previous keg run had blown open the safe already so that it was unnecesary, but the guy with this keg didn’t seem to notice.

So anyway, his other teammates are raiding the vault, and one guy goes in there to pick up the gold. Right as he bends over to pick up the sack, brilliant teammate drops in the burning powder keg onto the vault from the roof. The teammate in the vault has just about 2 seconds to turn, look at it, and appreciate how his dumbass teammate just blew him up. Boom.

Cracked me the hell up.

Last day of the sale, encore day. All the top sellers from the previous sale days are up again.

Thief: Deadly Shadows
Red Faction Guerrilla
Trine
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Just Cause 2
Borderlands
Arma 2
Left 4 Dead 2
GTA 4
Mass Effect 2
World of Goo
Bioshock 2
Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack
Killing Floor
Vic IV

Must resist the urge to buy Just Cause 2!

I picked up Dark Star One for 3.50 or so. Nice bit of Privateer like nostalgia for the price of about 1.2 gallons of gas is a win in my book.

It’s the last day of the sale (until 10am PST tomorrow) so make sure you grab whatever you’ve wanted this whole time. I’ve been waiting for all the daily sales before buying any non-daily sale. Now I have to go through the list of the hundreds of regular sales…

Well, I’m addicted to cheap games. I picked up 35 games during this sale - and I probably would’ve picked up more except I already own half the stuff that went on daily sale. 44 if you count gifts.

But I only spent $98 (excluding gifts) which means under $3 per game.

How’d you guys make out?

I only bought The Guild 2 and its expansion. The reviews aren’t great, but it looks like the kind of game I like (and a lot of US review sites tend to be kind of harsh when it comes to reviewing Euro games, IME).

I broke and bought Bioshock 2 and L4D2 today. I hadn’t intended to pay over $7.50 per game, but I’ve heard such good things about those two, and for new games, the prices were terrific (around $25 for both, or roughly half of what I’d normally pay for either).

Anyway, I missed much of the sale, so what I ended up buying was:

EVE Online: Tyrannis
Supreme Commander 2
Zeno Clash
World of Goo
Left 4 Dead 2
Bioshock 2

Good additions, I believe, to my regular died of Napoleon: Total War, Fallout 3 and Portal.

I bought The Witcher and Thief Deadly Shadows. I had played Deadly Shadows before and was surprised how good it was. The Witcher I am having a lot of fun with. I was hoping for a free-roam game like Oblivion, this is closer to Dragon Age, but I seem to be playing it more than I did Dragon Age, probably because the battles are easier.

I almost bought GTA IV. I finished it twice on the PS3. But with the bugs, performance issues, Securom, Windows Lives crap, and 16GB of hard drive space, I couldn’t even make myself pay $5 for it.

Lets see, I ended up getting:
Borderlands
Burnout Paradise (I think that was during this sale)
FlatOut
Ghostbusters
GTA IV
Killing Floor
Civilization IV Complete

No idea when I’m going to have time to play all these, though…I’m expecting they’ll last me a good long while.

I picked up The Force Unleashed and nothing else. It’s mostly because most of the games that fit my taste were also on sale last Christmas. I still have games from then that I haven’t played, like Bioshock and Jade Empire.

My haul:

Commandos pack
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom
Oddworld 1&2
Red Faction: Guerilla
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Titan Quest & Expansion
Trine

Still have Witcher from last sale, and Torchlight is on hold. I’m thinking I’ll get to Trine next as it seems casual enough. There were a bunch more that I passed on, and a few I bought which I probably won’t get to anytime soon. I figure $2.50 is a floor on their prices, so if it’s something I’ll eventually play I’ll get it when it hits there.

Lessee . . .

Lead & Gold
Mass Effect 2
Titan Quest
Bioshock
Red Faction
FlatOut
Introversion Pack
Sup Com 2

11 games for 60 bucks . . . well, call it nine. Uplink and the original Darwinia seem to suck pretty hard in comparison to all the indie hype they got.

Well somewhat amusingly nobody has contacted me for a copy of HL2. I guess everyone has it or doesn’t care. The offer is still open if anyone does want it.

My damage? I’m not sure what has come form this sale or previous ones but:
Metro 2033
Deus Ex (already had a copy but it was so cheap and I’ve started storing away old games).
Mass Effect (same as above)
Ghost Master (same)
Supreme Commander 2 I was always curious about this game but not enough for full price
Tropico 3
Ghost Busters
Alpha Protocol…no wait I paid full price for that shortly before the sale. Damnit.

So how is Supreme Commander 2? I was going to jump on it, but the horrible reviews at Amazon turned me off.

I escaped with just buying the orginal XCom (I missed the entire pack for $4). I’ve been enjoying that in all of its 256 color VGA glory!

  • I honestly don’t know if it’s really just 256 color.

I’m told - and I haven’t played it but I’ve seen this said by many people - that you’re better off getting Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, the standalone expansion to the first game. The second game was codeveloped so that they could turn out a console version, which dumbed it down - fewer units and buildings, less strategic complexity, simpler controls, etc.

But for $7 I’m sure it was worth it. For whatever reason SupCom 1/FA isn’t available on steam.

I’m greatly enjoying Trine. It’s definitely casual, but the puzzles are engaging. It’s a nice mix of action and puzzler that reminds me of The Lost Vikings.

And it’s pretty. So, so pretty.

I bought a few games that turned out to be duds because I didn’t do sufficient research. Flatout: Ultimate Carnage simply will not work in Wine right now, and Borderlands uses SecuROM which also won’t run in Wine and I wouldn’t have it on Windows anyway. Nasty piece of work. If I could get a refund citing SecuROM as the problem I would.

Still, I picked up L4D and L4D2 as well as a couple other decent games.

My damage this round:

Space Rangers 1 & 2
Meridian4 Complete Pack
King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame
The Sherlock Holmes Collection
1C Complete Collection

Plenty of games to tide me over until the next Black Friday

I’m liking it, tho I was never hardcore enough to be any good at the original. It definitely takes pains to be less unique and ambitious than Supcom 1: the tiered engineer system is replaced by a generic research tree, everything you build has to be paid for up front, and there’s no storage cap for your resources. Also, buildings can only be built by single workers. Odd, but build times are rebalanced, and it actually succeeds in making your commander an asset rather than a liability. If you’re a really hardcore RTS player who wants something ambitious and unique, you [del]should buy[/del] already own and regularly play the original Supcom, but if you’re more casual and just want a strategy game where the interface works with you and not against you, it’s a pretty good deal.

Not very far into it but pretty generic so far (though the scale seems a bit larger). I could never get the original to work right on my PC and by the time I upgraded I had moved on so I don’t know how it compares.

It seems like it will be worth the sale price but I’m glad I didn’t pay full for it.
