I’m not opposed to getting Counter Strike. My problem with many of the games that are as popular as CS is that you can’t find a “quiet” server where just your friends can play. I can’t stand “death spawning” for 20 minutes because some psycho’s are snipe spawning.
As others have said I would at least try Plants vs Zombies. IMHO it’s worth playing the whole game for song at the end.
I’ve played the demo and I like tower defense games so I’ll get to it eventually. I’ve just inadvertently built up an incredibly large collection of games.
We have a few options there. There are always empty servers available to play in but they’re open to the public and we won’t have any admin privileges, or we can have Beef host the server with his impressive internet connection.
I’m not really bothered with the sniping but a lot of people hate it. Some servers are modded to ban the AWP and even in a regular server, if we’re the only ones in it, we can just ask people not to use them.
I really enjoy Counter Strike games with smallish teams that actually work together instead of having people just go for the highest score possible.
Pubstacking TF2 is probably you’re best bet. The game is sweet and offers people ways to be useful regardless of their skill level.
And hats!
Hmm I need to find a new time waster.
I got evil genius, but it did the annoying thing of suddenly getting tons harder without warning. Now I realize I have to totally start over after hours of game play and go slower, not appealing.
I also got overlord 2, but a First-person God-game is kind of claustrophobic and wierd, I can never find where the next step to advance the quest is.
The only tower defense game I’ve played in recent memory was Pixeljunk Monsters. I found that to be immensely entertaining for a while. Does anyone have any thoughts about whether this’ll be fun for someone like me (based on what little info you have)?
I thought Company of Heroes was pretty boring myself. Click-click-click build base click-click-click queue units click-click-click capture resource point. Repeat.
Well, you could reduce any game to that sort of statement and it would sound pretty boring.
Sorry, didn’t mean to disparage anyone’s choice of game. I just find RTS games pretty boring in general. (Maybe because I can’t click fast enough. ;))
In COH’s defense, it does a fairly good job at balancing the game for slower players. I’m with you though, the genre is kind of boring.
I’ve never played Pixeljunk, but Plants vs. Zombies is IMO one of the best (if not the best) Tower Defense I’ve ever played. And I’ve played a fair number of them, looking for a fix as good as PvZ. (My other favorites are the free online game Bloons 4, and the hidden level of Warcraft III). Definitely worth a $4 risk for you, I think, if you’ve ever liked tower defense games.
Plus it has a ton of minigames, some of which are pretty fun as well.
First and foremost, get healthy. No point being sick for an extra month because you’re overtired.
As I told Trope, I’ll get around to getting Counterstrike, being as I’m the last one on Earth without it. I can see how it might be fun with all SDMB’ers, though I worry about public trolls wrecking any team experience (though the same goes for TF2).
We tried TF2 before, but I don’t think it was coordinated enough for the newbies. Perhaps the next time we try we should find a quiet server.
I think Napolean, Civ III and the others would be cool as well, though I haven’t started playing them yet to know for sure.
The free Gemcraft games are great too.
I’m not sure what you mean coordinated enough for the newbies. I’m able to run a pretty adequate server on my machine if we need - it went well tonight, we had about 15 players on and off with 12 on at once and a 6v6 SDMB game which was fun. I’ll probably try something together saturday afternoon… not sure if the holiday will take away or boost numbers.
Btw, is the pc version of plants vs zombies the same as the iphone version? I already have the latter, and I assume it’s the same, so no need to rebuy.
We had a TF2 game tonight on a 16 man server, filled mostly with Dopers and it worked pretty well. A big plus is that since the rounds are shorter than L4D, it’s easier to hop in and out of a game without changing the balance too much.
+1 for Plants vs. Zombies. It plays differently from other tower defence games in which there is less emphasis on messing with the AI’s pathfinding and just building plain big organic weapons to blast the enemies.
For example, Defense Grid, another excellent tower defence game, emphasis on building a maze to funnel the enemies. I think most other games of this nature has an emphasis on this. Not so for Plants vs Zombies.
And it’s darn cute and the writing’s good.
I picked up Hearts of Iron 3 and Swords and Soldiers last night on sale. Pretty much on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of hardcore vs. casual. If I can spend the huge amount of time needed to understand Hoi3, I think I will enjoy it, but the slow pace of the game is annoying me a bit so far.
I started as a small country so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed, but that made waiting fifteen minutes to get from January 1936 to February rather dull. I’m playing Persia, but I may start over and look for a more active power to play in the 1939 campaign.
I like Paradox games, and Crusader Games is still an all time favorite, but I’m not totally sure whether HOI3 will turn out to be an enjoyable game or not. Getting a chance to try it for 14 bucks seemed worth it, but I wouldn’t pay full price for it.
Swords vs. Soldiers is one of those one dimensional battle games, which I have played and enjoyed in flash, plus it has more action gaming stuff like spells. I’ve played the first six levels last night. Having three different campaigns should extend the fun, but I hope the basic theme of building up your gold workers and struggling in the early game until you can overwhelm the enemy doesn’t get stale.
Seems like it will be good fun, for a while at least.
I played the first few levels of Plants vs. Zombies last night and very much enjoyed it – thanks, folks!

I’ve been waiting for a hot pursuit sale, but I’m not very enthusiastic at $30. I’d have probably snatched it up at $20. If everyone who I was talking to about getting it together wants to get it at $30, I would too, but I think most of us will probably be ok with waiting a month or two and seeing if it gets down below $20.
Forgot to add that l4d2 is $5 if you own L4D1
Oblivion is good obviously especially if you load up on some mods and texture packs and graphics mods, it can be pretty great. Shatter is a fun brick breaker game if you like that sort of thing. L4D2 obviously for $5 is good but if you don’t have it by now you probably are defective in some way anyway. Don’t have any familiarity with the others.
