Steam holiday sale Dec 20-Jan 2

Europa Universallis is a good buy at 5 bucks if you’re into Paradox/strategy games. It isn’t one of those games that you just jump into and can master it, though.

I’m really tempted to get Hegemony…

Can someone really be into Paradox/strategy games without owning EU?

Yeah, Hearts of Iron is pretty big and engrossing.

Actually it was the last one I came to! HoI, Vicky, then Crusader Kings.

Touche buddy. Touche.

And yeah, I’m like the above poster, I came to EU very late. First was HOI, then Vicky (which I prefer over the new one, mainly because it runs on my computer), then EU.

Huh. Weird. I’ve always regarded EU as Paradox’s flagship title. But then I also kind of feel they’re not quite the company they once were. That may just be nostalgia talking, though.

That said, I’ll be picking up EU3 Complete* today since I never played any of the expansions. Maybe they fixed some of the issues I had with it.

*most inaccurate title ever

What issues did you have with it? I have all the expansions and maybe I could tell you.

It’s been almost four years since I last played it, but I’ll try to remember a few:

  1. I thought they swung too far away from historical “realism”. I was a big fan of EU2 but agreed that it could go too far in preventing the AI from straying from history with a lot of prescriptive events. When I started playing EU3 though, I found that it went too far the other way.

Looking over the forums over the past week after buying Vicky2 I’ve seen that the response for this tends to be that the games are “history games, not history simulators”, but that seems like an excuse for poor depth/AI.

  1. I found the switch in the way events worked to remove a lot of the flavor of playing each country. Everything seemed so… generic. I loved playing different countries in EU2, but in EU3 they pretty much all felt the same.

  2. Did they change the map? I found some parts to be really poorly shaped. I ended up modding the map of Japan in vanilla EU3 so that I could write my Sengoku mod.

I’ll get it regardless because of the modding community.

Woops, posted this to the wrong thread originally.

It’s pretty easy to be useful in tf2 as you’re learning. You can run around as a medic healing your team while getting used to the maps and how the game works. It’s a pretty simple game anyway.

Today’s dailies:

Fry Cry 2: Fortune’s edition $5 (75%)
Theater of War games 75% off - complete pack $11.25
Team Fortress 2 $5 (75%)
Star Wars Jedi Knight collection (5 games) $5 (75%)
Dawn of Discovery $15 (50%)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Bundle (original, call of pripyat) $5
Empire & Napoleon Total War GOTY edition (all games + DLC) $25 (50%)
Hitman Collection (3 games) $7.50 (75%)
Flight Control HD $1.60 (66%)
Supreme Commander 2 $3.75 (75%)
Command and Conquer games 75% off (4 games)
Guardians of Graxia $2.50 (75%)
and indie: Madballs in babo, $2.50 (75%)
Woops, forgot to check for the bonus discount deal again. If you own Rome or Medieval 2 Total War, you get the Empire/Napoleon pack for $20.

So grab TF2 if you don’t have it. It’s not great but it’s fun, cheap, fairly casual friendly, and a lot of us have it.

The STALKER games are fun, definitely worth $5 there.

If you don’t have Empire or Napoleon (or maybe even just one of the games without any dlc) that’s a good price on a package deal. You get everything for both games in that. I also found out you can do 1v1 all the way through 4v4 multiplayer in those games, so we can get some SDMB gmes going.

I’ll probably pick up the Hitman games at $2.50/piece.

I have no idea if C&C games are good nowdays, haven’t played them for about 10 years. Are any of those games worth it?

The sale is almost up, so if you have advice about non-daily sales go ahead and post it now. Today will be a fresh batch of deals, but tomorrow is most likely to be an encore of best sellers, so comb the list of games to see what’s left that you didn’t get.

Are you sure? The sentiment I’m hearing on other boards is that this is it, the last day.

ETA: Ah, nevermind. I guess you posted that towards the end of the previous day’s sales

We’ll have another batch of daily sales (probably the encore) in about 21 hours. That will be the last day of the sale.

Today’s dailies:
Bionic Commando Pack (Bionic Commando 2009, Bionic Commando: Rearmed) $12.50 (50%)
Football Manager $26.79 (33%)
AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity $2.50 (75%)
Swarm Arena $2.50 (75%)
Company of Heroes series 75% off (main game $2.50, opposing fronts $5, tales of valor $7.50)
Half-life series 75% off (all under $2)
Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga $20 (50%)
Zeno Clash $3.75 (75%)
Medal of Honor $30 (50%)
Mafia 2 $12.50 (75%)
Settlers 7: Path to a Kingdom $25 (50%)
Indie: Ion Assault $2.50 (75%)

The company of heroes series is great and possibly the best RTS games ever. The tales of valor expansion isn’t that important but I’d recommend the original + opposing fronts for $7.50, or at the very least, everyone should own the original game for $2.50.

The Half Life series is an obvious buy but wtf is wrong with you if you don’t own them already?

AaAaAA is pretty decent for the price.

I was waiting for Episode 3 to come out before buying them. But for $6.50, I’ll get them now.

This sale has done crazy things to my sense of price. I’m sorely tempted by the THQ pack, since $50 for Dawn of War I & II, Saint’s Row 2, Company of Heroes, Metro 2033, and Titan Quest is a damn good price. But $50 seems so expensive after buying everything for $5 or less

The THQ pack is a great deal - it ends up averaging out to less than the $5 anyway.

As expected today is a top sellers encore. This will be the last day of the sale, so grab anything you’ve been waiting on a daily sale for that never popped up.

If you were interested in TF2, you should’ve got it a few days ago for $5, but if you didn’t, and you’re interested in playing with us on our SDMB TF2 server, grab it now for $10.

I’m also gonna try Race 07 since it’s only $5 and I don’t have any Serious Racing Games. Online races with 25 people sound cool. Not sure if the game is good but if you want to give it a try, you’ll have me and probably a few others to play with.

I’m still tempted by NWN2 for $10, but I think I’m done…

Fortunately a number of these games are things I’ve already played, so my backlog of games isn’t quite as bad as it seems.

I was going to say that I really didn’t get much this year, but I got 23 games and 4 indie packs in the month of december.

Which… I guess isn’t that much… compared to what I’ve gotten in previous Christmas sales. I guess I’m running into the problem of not being able to buy many more games because I already own everything.

Last minute recommendations: I’d grab the indie mix pack for Defcon alone, but the other games are good too. I’d like to get some occasional SDMB defcon games going again.

The frozenbyte complete pack for $6 is pretty great if you don’t own any of those games already (trine/shadowgrounds and expansion).

I listed all the various super cheap good games here

Well, all I got this Christmas from Steam is just SimCity 4.
