steam room vs. hot humid day?

After swimming or exercise at the gym, my friends and I look forward to sitting in the steam room for 20 minutes or so.

Today, in southern California even though there was minimal humidity, the temperature was quite warm outside which led me to think the following: Why do people enjoy a steam room with its elevated temperatures and moisture in the air and yet even when leaving an air conditioned environment do not enjoy the hot humid outdoors as I remember witnessing in New York, New Jersey or elsewhere? or do they?

If this is a poll, I prefer dry.

I don’t understand the appeal of steam rooms myself. I’ve tried them once or twice and both times I felt like I couldn’t breath. But then, I have weird lungs. If I don’t leave the bathroom door open when taking a hot shower I get dizzy and start to see black spots. I assume that I would eventually pass out if I stayed in the shower long enough. I’ve considered that this might be psychosomatic, but it happens when I’ve closed the bathroom door and forgotten that it was closed, so I just chalk it up to some residual effects of having asthma as a kid.

Probably not related, but where I work, the AC is on constantly, to the point where you need a jacket, like always. In the afternoon when I run for lunch, the temps could be anywhere in the area of 90 degrees F. Well having been cold all day, I’ll be the only person drivin’ around with the windows up and the heat cranked. I do it because my body is so so cold, that the warmth feels so sooo good. Weird eh?
