Steam Winter Sale

People keep voting for games other than the one I voted for in the “community choice” part of the sale. That’s fine, but I keep forgetting what I voted for, and might want to go back and buy it anyway. Does anyone know if there’s a way to find out what all was put up for a vote?

Yeah, that one is “Community Ambassador,” and I did that too since I was further away from 5th.

Dirt 3 is one of the flash sales for another 2 hours, $6. If you like racing games it’s really fun, and I’d organize more dirt 3 games if people wanted to play it. Looks like they removed dirt 2 - probably because GFWL is shutting down, and they’re going to update Dirt 3 to work with steamworks but not dirt 2 I guess. It’s too bad, dirt 2 is my favorite racing game ever.

You get a snow globe card every time you make a badge from OTHER games trading cards, for the record. So start playing a game that has trading cards (there’s currently over 100-200 of them) and when you can make a badge, it will give you one globe card as a reward (among other things)

Idle Thoughts
(level 21 on Steam)

Just diving in for those still on the fence. Get Orcs must die (both of them). Why?

Do you enjoy fun? Do you find Pleasure pleasurable? If you do you will enjoy Orcs must die.

Is SimCity worth US$5? Metacritic suggests not (64 for critics, 2.1 user score), but maybe if the early days problems are sorted out?

Also: I’m not a fan of Orcs Must Die II, despite liking tower defense.

There’s actually a forum thread for that on Steam. I needed two globes and had two spares. Had them both within about 30 seconds through their automated trading system.

Click “Find out more” on the store page. Click “Get and introduction to trading cards” under “What are trading cards?” Join the “Steam Trading Card Group” and click on the “Snow Globe Trade Center 2.0” thread, which should be the top of the popular discussions. First post tells you how to set it all up.

Where did you find this for $5? The one on Steam is SimCity 4, which gets pretty good reviews, 84 and 8.7 on MetaCritic. I enjoyed it.

From what I have read, the problems run far deeper than that. The abysmal launch merely hid the true scope of their failure.

Nowhere, I was mistaken. Only place I could find SimCity 5 for download was the Origin site, and they want AU$60 for the deluxe. I would have considered it for US$5.

If you’re interested in trying out a city builder, SimCity 4 is a pretty decent place to start at that price.

Thanks, sounds like good advice.

I got Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians from the current flash sale. I’m not big on platformers but my daughter thought it looked cool.

The original SimCity is worth $5, if you can get it to run on a modern O/S.

The “reboot” SimCity isn’t worth it even if you paid me $100 – mostly because it’s non-Steam, but it also totally sucks.

Not to hijack this thread away from its purpose, but what problems face the new Simcity other than its DRM/always-on internet thingy?

The AI is apparently shit, for starters. If you had half a dozen fire stations scattered around your city, they’d all send their fire truck to the same fire, then send them all to the next fire, and so on.

Other than the AI mentioned above (check out this vid for abysmal pathfinding), what turned me off it is the tiny maps compared to SimCity 4. Likewise you can’t morph the terrain to create any type of map you desire like you could in 4, if you want to recreate your own home town for instance.

Being treated as a criminal by default by EA is just one of the games many problems, I wouldn’t touch it with a bargepole. Despite being a decade old SimCity 4 is the superior game no matter how you look at it; I’ve got it off Steam and it’s running just fine on Windows 7 64 bit. I did have high hopes for Cities XL Platinum which was on sale earlier, but sadly it’s apparently a buggy broken mess. Still better than the new SimCity.

I’ve bought several games during this sale, and every one I’ve tried has had bugs that made it unplayable, that were only solved after trying various remedies found on Google, that I would never have thought of myself.

What the hell did people do before the internet?
