The 2013 Steam Summer Sale has begun!

Oh yeah…

Those trading cards seem like a really shitty replacement for the previous sideshows.

Site’s getting hammered right now. Vote Dishonored for $10!

$10 is about right for Dishonored. It’s more a proof-of-concept that an actual game.

I want Endless Space but can’t get to the store…

Will I get the sale price, since that is what it went into the cart with, if I can’t get on in time?

I’m pretty excited. I usually like to try to find gems or older AAA games for around $10, but I’m not sure how many of those are left that aren’t in my library already. I’ve been waiting for Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite, but I’m not sure my desire to play those is strong enough to pay even these discount prices. Money’s not even an issue; it’s the principle of the thing. One the one hand, I could certainly wait another year and get them at the price I want (probably, or at least closer)… on the other hand, I’m not especially excited about any of the unplayed games I’ve got now. Decisions, decisions!

I’m feeling the same way about AC3, which I’m sure will be similarly discounted at some point.

I’m curious about Endless Space and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. From what I’ve read, Endless Space seems to be the only playable “4X” game since Masters of Orion (which I never played, but I bet I would have enjoyed it), and Gunslinger seems to be a fun, short shooter. Does anyone here recommend either as a “must buy”?

I’m totally ignoring the trading cards. I’m not shooting myself in the foot by doing that, am I?

I’m not sure how Steam handles that sort of thing - I think ordinarily they wouldn’t let you let it sit in your cart beyond the duration of the sale and give it to you at sale price. However, if they have store problems for an extended period of time they will likely extend sales to compensate.

That’s my guess, at any rate. Any other approach (if the store is inaccessible the whole time) would be counter to their reputation and bring endless nerd rage upon the company from Skyirm and Bioshock fans.

I’d try to get on again and finalize your purchase before the sale price is over, though - the store will most likely be up and running at some point between now and then.

That sounds like it would take forever to download…

Endess Space really is good. It’s a basic, no-frills 4X game - but very polished, with an excellent user interface.

Copying my post from the other sale thread:

Amazon has a one-time use coupon for 15% a digital game: “Gooncave”. Amazon usually price matches Steam, except for flash deals, so if you see a daily you want today you might want to wait and see if Amazon matches it and then snag the extra 15% off. Amazon does not carry Bethesda digital titles so no Skyrim, Dishonored, etc. I believe the coupon is only for today & tomorrow.

You can currently get Bioshock Infinite for $24 from GreenManGaming when you use coupon code GMG20-F202F-UI40F. That’s a better price than today’s Steam daily special.

Has anyone else had credit card problems today on Steam? It’s the first time Steam says a transaction can’t be done because of credit card problems. All my other bills got on my card quite fine so I’m wondering if the Steam-credit card connection might be difficult because of network overload.

Definitely pick up Endless space if the 4X genre interests you. Excellent game, specially after all the free updates and the expansion - which by the way you should pick up. Get the Gold version which includes the expansion and is only a buck and change more!

I’d assume server issues. People are reporting tons of problems with all parts of the site: login, cart, checkout, Steam Market, profile inventory, etc.

It’s probably for the best that I’m broke right now, seeing as how I have 20 or so games from the last summer sale that I haven’t played yet. I can’t think of anything I particularly want right now, other than the Civ V expansion.

I really doubt it. E.g. Amazon tells you that the price changed since you added it, but doesn’t let you take the lower price.

I really want Bioshock but I can still wait until it’s a bit cheaper. My impulse control is such that I can play the games I have still. I’ll get Scribblenauts for 75% off though.

I posted this in the other digital distribution thread, thought it might help some folks here that are new to Steam sales.

Steam sale tips**
Add games you want to your wishlist, and you’ll be notified when they go on sale. Occasionally there will be promotions where you can win games off your list. I like to keep it populated.

Remember, don’t buy a game unless it’s a daily deal or a flash sale. Many games are on sale, and they will remain on sale for the length of the event. Wait it out, wait to see if they go on Daily Deal or a Flash Sale. If they don’t go on deeper discount, you can always buy them the last day of the sale.

The last day of the sale is traditionally an encore sale, where they bring back the most popular of the flash sales and daily deal games. Here’s your second chance to get that deal you missed out on - if you’re lucky.

If something is a daily deal, can it become a flash deal?

I’m looking to gift some of these games. I already have a few. Is it possible to put games on my wishlist if I already have them? That’d help me use the trick above.

Um. . .hmmm. No, I don’t believe so. If someone has different info, post it, but I don’t think it happens that way. If I see something as a flash deal or daily deal, I accept that will be the lowest price for that item during the sale. I don’t recall them ever having an item as a flash deal or daily deal, then having the same item up for sale again in the other category.

They’ll have games for sale at a certain price for the entire duration of the sale, and THEN have it as a flash deal or daily deal at some point, but that’s it.

Dunno if you can put a game you already own on your wish list. Best way to find out is to try, but if I had to guess, I’d say no.

I picked up the vanilla version of Endless Space on sale not too long ago. I like it. It’s a much better spiritual successor to Master of Orion II than Master of Orion III. The combat is rather hands-off, but I’ve read that they revamped it in the expansion. I now wish I’d picked up the expansion, because the pricing to buy them separately is weird.
