My husband and I love all kinds of movies, but recently have been looking for some good steampunk type movies to watch. Any suggestions?
It would be a stretch to call Mutant Chronicles a good movie, but it does feature some steampunk elements, including a coal-burning dropship.
Hellboy 2 has some steampunk influence.
City of Lost Children sort of does–not so much the polished-brass thing as the fantastic pseudoVictorian grimy city with weird science everywhere. In any case it’s a ridiculously good movie.
Wild Wild West is very stupid, no question, but totally steampunk.
It seems most (all?) steampunk movies are crap. But, here is a few of them nevertheless:
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (The graphic novels are very good, though)
Van Helsing (Sort of qualifies.)
Wild Wild West (Salma Hayek’s and her ass are the only redeemable parts of this movie, IMO.)
The Time Machine (I don’t know how many versions there may be…the one I know if is from early 2000’s, but not very good, either.)
Actually, here is a list of steampunk movies from Wikipedia. (Though it doesn’t have The Time Machine, or really any H.G.Wells or Jules Verne books turned movies, which seems odd…surely there must be a lot, what with them being public domain and all.
It lists The Prestige as steampunk…eh, I’d really, REALLY hesitate to call it that, myself. There is really only one part that makes it fit that genre, it’s mostly just historical fiction. But it is really, REALLY good, so watch it anyway.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Very good steampunk.
Wild Wild West with Will Smith and Kevin Kline is fun.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow might be considered steampunk.
Ninja’d twice!
Sucker Punch comes out in March, and looks promising.
City of Ember has elements of steampunk.
And Steamboy, is very steampunk, but it’s also anime, which I am not much of a fan of.
I’d hesitate to call Sky Captain steampunk. It’s more 1930s pulp adventure.
It’s Dieselpunk.
Because the train runs on steam?
Wild Wild West - The movie is full of steam powered inventions.
Not a move, but a good TV series is Murdoch Mysteries set in 1890s Toronto. The hero, William Murdoch, uses the latest scientific methods, and beyond, to solve mysteries. The first episode guest starred Tesla. If Murdoch lived today he’d be a geek programmer. We’re about 4 DVDs into the first season, but so far they’re great.
Master of the World (based on Jules Verne’s Robur the Conqueror is a steampunk movies from before the term was invented and based on a novel from that age. I think there might be a Czech version also.
That sounds more like it.
I’d hesitate to call it “very good”.
Has anyone mentioned Wild Wild West yet?
I thought we were going to call this Post-Modern Gothic Surrealism.
Not just in the technology, but also in the spunky girl reporter right out of His Gal Friday.
There’s also Atompunk and Clockpunk.
