Hello good dopers,
a quick question, maybe.
Are the absorption patterns for individual stars completely unique, or do we not have a wide enough database.
As a corollary if the identification of a previously known star can be confirmed through it’s RF signature, how unique are they, again given our database, as unique as human or fruit fly DNA?

How unique is unique enough? If you had a detailed-enough database of stellar spectra, and had a detailed-enough spectrum to compare to that database, you could identify the star that spectrum came from. But no observation is perfect: With enough noise, you can mix up stars with each other.
