Stereotypes in school?

This is something i have a strong opinion about! I live in PA and a local school (7 or 8 grade) has brought about a very harsh and eye-opening subject… stereotypes. I believe that students, me included as i am a junior in high school, need to be educated in what is truth and what is not. Everyone uses a stereotype every once in a while. These children were given a worksheet to complete, not graded, but to teach the kids that what they think is true may not be the case, yet this teaching style is being argued by many parents in the school saying that this is not approprate for the kids. That i agree with but what if the teaching was moved to a high school level? Teach the students who need to go out into the world, get jobs, meet new people? I think we need to know about this stuff…
What do you think?

You are definitely on the side of the angels! This is the sort of stuff they need to learn as soon as possible.

As a Middle school teacher (7th grade Reading), I believe that this needs to be at the Middle school level. Middle school seems to be where a lot of the preconceptions develop. I see it all the time. In order to appease the parents, perhaps the school should send a notice home explaining the program. Then, if a parent doesn’t want their child to participate (which says a lot about them as parents, IMHO), they can contact the school.
