Steve Miller, who, with Sharon Lee, wrote the very successful Liaden Universe novels, was found unresponsive last night. CPR and EMTs couldn’t help.
I’ve known Steve and Sharon for a couple of decades, and this is a shock. He has had heart issues for a long time, but seemed to be doing OK. He was posting on Facebook just the day before. He was a good guy and much fun to talk with. He attended Albacon regularly (and shared the GOH slot with Sharon)
I saw that. I’m really sory to hear it. I enjoyed his work.
I haven’t read any of the work; but I’m sorry for your loss.
From Conflict of Honors (Del Rey, 1988) through Salvage Right (Baen, 2023) I have enjoyed Steve Miller and Sharon Lee’s work for more hours than I can count, reading and re-reading. This is very sad news indeed. I believe Baen has their novels in print (caution - there are omnibus editions that include multiple earlier novels) and at least one (two, I think) in their Free Library (caution, consumption may prove habit-forming). I feel I’ve lost a friend I never met.
After reading one of their books I had promptly bought all the ones currently in print, so when I heard they were going to be Guests of Honor at a convention I brought the whole collection to their autograph table. Since for some reason there was almost no line when I got there I got a chance to chat, and Steve told me where I could find some of the books I was missing.
