Stihl Timbersports Series?!

Who is watching this? I can see it’s a serious competition. And it’s quite organized

I’d be very interested to see how big their numbers are. ABC is airing this, opposite NFL football.

No doubt, these men are badasses with chainsaws and axes. This much has just been shown in high definition.

But, does anyone watch? I’m looking out for the wide high crane shots moving over the arena. The house isn’t sold out- and this is the National Championships !!

Anyone a fan?

I understand that it is quite a big deal in New Zealand.

I used to love watching those competitions when I was a kid; if this one was on in front of me I’d gladly watch.

Yea, I remember them being broadcast somewhere on basic cable pretty frequently during the mid-90’s. They were fun to watch. I think they had a wider variety of events though, with log-rolling and poll climbing as well as the more straightforward chopping up wood events.

haha sorry, I guess I should have been more specific: I used to love watching those competitions back in the early '70s when I was a kid; if this one was on in front of me I’d gladly watch.

I watched some of this (I was curious)

The single buck didn’t seem much slower than the stock chainsaw (the hot rod chainsaws were a different story)

Brian

I saw it for the first time the other day , Reminded me of Lumby Days in the Interior of British Columbia .

I only caught part of it , did they have pole climbing ?
Was well worth watching.

It’s been going on for a long time, and has a relatively small but devoted following. I used to know a few of the lower tier competitors so I’ve watched it from time to time. The college series is a lot of fun, and I used to compete in the northeast collegiate version.

Lots of niche sports have tv coverage; there’s lots of channels and lots of eyeballs.

This kind of event was the staple on ABC’s Wide World of Sports for many years.

The only timber sports event I ever remember WWOS airing was the annual World Lumberjack Championships in Hayward, WI - and even then, pretty much the only two events it aired were the log rolling and the pole climbing.

ESPN used to (and, apparently, still does, although I can’t find it on either ESPN’s or ESPN2’s schedule) have a dedicated Stihl Timbersports Series show; there was even a “Great Outdoor Games” (that included shooting and archery events) for a few years.
