Did you fall asleep during Morpheus’s long speil? The machines use humans plus a “form of fusion.”
Of course, this raises the question “Why include humans at all?” I like the Steak Hypothesis that one Doper came up with. The machines could very well survive on just fusion energy, but it’s just a lot tastier when channelled through humans.
I agree with this but I think there was something more to it.
Morpheus believed Neo was The One to the extent that he (Morpheus) was willing to sacrifice himself to save Neo. This is why he let himself be captured in the bathroom, shortly after the deja vu scene.
Because Neo did not yet believe that he himself was The One, and because he knew that Morpheus was very important to the human rebellion, he (Neo) went to extreme measures to rescue Morpheus from the agents. It’s been a while since I watched Matrix 1, but I thought the Oracle says something to Neo alluding to the fact that Morpheus was going to try to give up his life for The One, and when he got captured almost everyone except Neo was prepared to consider Morpheus lost.
So it was important for Neo not to think that he himself was The One, because otherwise he might have let Morpheus make that sacrifice. Believing what he did at the time, he couldn’t let Morpheus do that.
