Whether or not someone can actually stick with something doesn’t mean they know or don’t know what works.

I disagree, since the primary issue in dieting is sticking. I mean, it’s trivial to invent a diet which will keep you thin for life if you stick to it. So a diet that “works” is one you stick to. The unspoken promise behind the carbohydrate/insulin hypothesis is that if you keep carbohydrate consumption down, you will naturally and easily lose weight without expending a lot of willpower.

Yes I would – in the sense that the person is evidently missing something important. He has one piece of the puzzle, but he doesn’t have “the secret.”

Similarly, a junkie who could recite all the medical literature about the techniques of controlling drug addiction may still be an addict.

Sure. And if he had announced that he finally figured out how to kick an addiction by following steps A, B, and, C, then he would probably have been wrong.

Questions about the biological impact of nutrition and the efficacy of various techniques of weight loss are scientific questions that can be answered objectively, not what anecdotes where the success or failure of one person to follow their knowledge tells us about it.

Well this is not scientific research, it’s simply informal discussion. Of course it’s limited, but it’s still interesting.
