Sorry, but I have to quibble with the Taubes part of this. He’s never had trouble with anyone challenging him. Further, he’s spent the last decade researching the field, which is what he does as a science journalist. Having MS’s in aerospace engineering and journalism, and writing regularly for the NY Times and Science, I think he’s capable of understanding the world of bio-sciences as well. From Wikipedia,

Listen, we went over this for 20 some pages in the monster thread. Many people, myself included, leveled several criticisms at Taubes’ research claims which demonstrates that no, he doesn’t actually know what he’s talking about, and is either stupid at best or a liar at worst. He blatantly misrepresents other research in a manner that makes it look as though it supports his assertions. The research he quotes does not support him whatsoever. If you’d like to rehash this argument, I suggest you start a “arguing about Gary Taubes’ “research supported” theories” thread, because this one is just about how Stoid has a hard on for his books.

I never said you have to tip toe around Diogenes and whether you would have used your “joke” (protip: jokes are funny) on another poster is irrelevant; the fact is, you made a snarky comment at the expense of a poster you are currently bitching about quite vocally in at least two other threads for derailing threads and otherwise posting in an obnoxious manner. For someone who wants to whine about Diogenes’ participation in threads, it’s pretty fucking stupid of you to practically call him out in a thread that he may have otherwise ignored completely, especially when there’s a whole other thread where you can take potshots and bitch about him to your heart’s content.

I don’t get why Stoid and everyone else think that his background in aerospace engineering gives him any insight whatsoever into bio-sciences. Studying any science may give you experience with reading scientific literature, but studying one type of science doesn’t bless you with the ability to come up with complex theories in a completely different field, particularly when they run contrary to most actual experts in the field.
I study biology, and yet I know less than zero about aerospace engineering. I’m willing to bet Taubes knows pretty much bubkis about the actual science of biology, and it’s a little insulting that the general public apparently thinks that bio-science is something that any old mope can pick up.
I only had time to glance at the original thread but it seems like needscoffee started the whole mess. Right there on the first page.

Holy shit, you’re right. My remembering of the thread was that Stoid finally took the advice of someone around page 3 or so, but that may have been another poster who recommended the book that she actually paid attention to. So I reiterate, needscoffee, if you want to start a thread to address the scientific inaccuracies of Taubes’ work, (I won’t call it research, because he doesn’t do any of that apparently), feel free to do so. I will join you.
Just chiming in here to say that her unique brand of unreason, condescension, and self-righteousness is a real shitpile. Her latest post to me in that thread–in which she quotes an entire paragraph, but focuses only on the word “nonsense” and pretends to herself as though the single word is my entire argument–is an excellent example of everything that’s wrong with humanity.
