Stolen verizon phone... no warantee, buying online. what are verizon's requirements?

I’ve done it before, bought a phone online and hooked it up on the verizon network.

however, after reviewing, I see trimodes, quadmodes, etc etc… I plan on buying a phone online, calling the number and getting it switched over.

What requirements are there in a phone in order to be hooked up to the verizon network (in the southern IL area) What do I “NEED” to have in order for the ‘friendly customer service rep’ to say “You’re all set sir!”

What about things to watch out for? Are there any no no’s? where they won’t hook it up? Any recommendations? I like the new Razr phones as well as the motorola L6… I tried the treo and I wasn’t a fan… regardless… what do I do to not screw myself over???
*Side note: my phone got stolen, no other choice and I dont want to pay retail…

If you’re buying through Verizon and you’re under contract, you’ve got no choice but to buy retail. If you throw a big enough fit, they may cut you a slight deal but it’ll be marked on your record so you won’t be able to do it again. Usually they require you to extend your contract again and probably even go to a higher price plan. That’s if you’re under contract and if you’re buying through Verizon.

If you’re buying from eBay, make sure the phone is Verizon branded. They’re cracking down on being able to use US Cellular or Alltel or otherwise compatible phones. Also, make sure the phone is emergency GPS enabled. Verizon will no longer activate phones that are not, so don’t plan on getting a cheapy $10 phone from 5 years ago… probably won’t have GPS.

But before you do any of that, check with your homeowners insurance. Sometimes they cover phones with no deductible… depends on who your insurance company is. Hope this helps (from a former Verizon employee, if that matters to ya).

I dropped my verizon phone in the toilet and bought a new one (same model) on ebay. I had no problems activating it, but make sure it is for the verizon network, I am not certain, but I doubt they could tell if it was the same make and model that you didn’t send it back to the manufacturer and get a reconditioned one back, I did that also. I have a very old LG black flip phone that I adore, I’ll continue using it until they pry it from my cold dead hands.

As far as I know, mine doesn’t have GPS anything, heck, it doesn’t even have text messages or a camera or speaker phone, but it has this really neat feature, it actually sends and receives calls. Fairly unique, I know.

The first thing you need is to make sure it’s a CDMA phone. “Quad mode” typically refers to GSM phones that can operate on both US frequency bands as well as both European bands, but Verizon doesn’t use GSM.

I’m a fan of LG phones.
