Is it possible to stop my car’s odometer from keeping track of how many miles I have driven. I’ve been told that if you have a non-electronic-readout odometer, then you can just pull the fuse. However, I want to get a car with an electronic readout odometer. My thoughts are that if I yoink the fuse, all it will do is stop the display, but the odometer will still keep track of the miles.
Also, what legal ramifications could I face, if any, for doing such a thing?
The reason I ask is that I am thinking about trading my current car in for a newer model. I figure it’ll be cheaper to lease, but I don’t want to worry about how much I am driving. (Most leases have a clause that stipulates the leasee cannot drive over 36,000 or so miles over the term of the lease.)
If you don’t want to worry about how much you are driving, then don’t lease. Sounds simple enough. If you can’t or won’t stick to the terms of a contract, then don’t sign it.
If I was of the mind to assist anyone in a criminal undertaking, I would tell them that the speedometer cable also keeps the odometer ticking (it works by multiplying speed by time to calculate distance).
I will merely assume that you live in a state or nation where such action is legal and leave it at that.
