I just came here to post the NY Times news as well. This does seem unduly hasty. Not that they’re wrong; they give the same arguments that are posted here many times: this election is too important to screw it up. (And that Biden will get their unequivocal endorsement if he stays in).
Have they suggested a replacement that they are willing to get behind?
There is no one on the fence between Biden and Trump who is there because they feel Biden is not liberal enough.

Gavin Newsom. Straight, white, male, Democrat. Of course there are lots of people who think the fact that he comes from California is disqualifying; but those people all live in states that will go to Trump even if Jesus Christ Himself ran as a Democrat.

Biden’s support among African-Americans was already slipping. Passing over Kamala Harris to give the top spot to a white guy would be the sure way to lose the election. (It would also be wrong, but that’s just mho)
It’s not exactly been hidden but still maybe not widely known but AG Sulzberger (the Chair of the NY Times board) and much of the editorial staff have been having a low key feud with the Biden administration for at least several months. Or maybe the last couple years.
It shocks me not at all that they would (irresponsibly in my opinion) print such a knee-jerk editorial.
