Stop smoking in the dorm!

Because, as everyone knows, it is impossible to enjoy yourself without getting so plastered you can’t remember your name in the morning.

I didn’t say that, nor do I believe it. I personally almost never drink and I hate being drunk. I’m not a Narky McNarkypants either, though. I don’t feel the need to make other people’s drinking and smoking habits my personal business.

:dubious:

Good thing you’re not living there then. They should not be smoking inside the building. Ninjachick is not “making it her business”; they are violating the dorm rules. Call me crazy but I think rules, in general, should be followed.

OH MY GOD. My mom does/did the exact same thing whenever I had to be in a car with her. I thought my head was going to explode because of that idiotic reasoning she had and tried to convince me of each time we had this fight. I’m glad (and sad) that I’m not the only one with this problem.

Everybody in a dorm violates dorm rules. That’s how it’s supposed to be. That’s college. If you don’t like it, don’t live in a dorm. Complaining about it is like complaining about the weather.

Back in my day, people didn’t have to make a big grandstanding show of how “bothered” they were by cigarette smoke. I think it’s just attention-seeking behavior and way to claim victimization. There are people in the world with real problems. Brain cancer is a real problem. Third world hunger is a real problem. Being able to smell cigarette smoke in a dorm is not a real problem. Suck it up and drive on. Sure, dorm life sucks, but college isn’t forever. Hell, get a job and live off campus. That’s what I did. Problem solved.

The difference of course between smoking and the other otherwise banned activities is that the smoke ends up in other people’s spaces.

Unless the drunk person is puking over your floor, their drinking isn’t intrusive the way that smoke is.

It is if it makes you nauseous or gives you headaches. If it makes someone physically ill, it sure as hell is a real problem.

How would you feel if a rotten foul sewer smell came from your neighbor’s house/apartment and filled your house with the smell of shit? Would that bother you? Do you like smelling the smell of shit? Could you live with that?

To me, the smell of shit is just as bad as the smell of smoke. It’s vile, disgusting, and nauseating. Smoke is also unhealthy and dangerous and causes cancer, just in case you haven’t heard.

I find that kind of complaining melodramatic and not credible. Cigarette smoke is not the same as shit. It’s just not. Let’s be real.

Hey with the economy these days , you never know what might happen.
Declan

Well, if it was me we’d have an issue considering when I inhale tobacco smoke my lungs lock up and I cease all breathing (or, depending on the amount, it may just become exceedingly difficult). I’mnot asthmatic, I’m not sure what it could be, neither isn’t my doctor (Tobacco doesn’t survive the heating for example so it’s not the tobacco itself), but all I know is cigarettes and cigars make me unable to breath and when someone smokes around me it can be a very big deal. I’m probably a rare case, but with how far the smoke spreads I think people like me are at least worth considering.

– They both smell bad. Really bad.
– Both make many people nauseous and/or cause headaches.

PLUS, cigarette smoke has the added bonus of being carcinogenic.

It can also trigger allergies and asthma attacks in some people. It can irritate the eyes, it’s bad for the skin, and makes your clothes and possessions smell bad.

So you’re right, smoke is not the same as shit. It’s WORSE.

So answer the question: how would you like it if a really bad smell (could be anything: sewage, rotting food, heavy perfume, body odor, cat urine, etc.) was entering your living quarters on a regular basis. Would that bother you?

I believe your empathy function is broken. Would it help if you pretended there was a young child involved? Seriously though, I don’t see anybody equating indoors smoking with brain cancer or world hunger. I also don’t see why somebody should have to move out of their dorm because of inconsiderate smokers. What I do see is you belittling other people’s problems and all around being an ass.

Oh, and dorm life doesn’t suck, at least not for some.

You’re talking to a brick wall, dude. Some people are just off the chart crazy with respect to cigarette smoke. I think the best course of action is to back off and let them sound like the melodramatic nutjobs they are. I know people who five years ago would hang out in the smokiest bars and maybe complain a bit, but not nearly so bitterly as they do when they get the slightest whiff of cigarette smoke now. It’s become socially acceptable to be hypersensitive about it, because cigarettes are evil.

For the record, I don’t smoke and never have. I just happen to have noticed a pattern with people who get so melodramatic about smoking: they’re the same people who get melodramatic about a lot of things (example: post #21).

Vanilla Yankee Candles make me nauseous and give me headaches (seriously, just thinking about them makes me want to hurl), but they sure as fuck weren’t banned from the girls’ wing of my dorm in college.

Last I checked, vanilla Yankee candles are not toxic carcinogens.

What would someone’s motivation be to complain about smoke if it didn’t truly affect them? I don’t get it. Do you deny that smoke smells bad and is unhealthy to breathe? Or are you one of the last people on earth who don’t believe that smoking causes cancer?

Look, it smells bad. It causes people to feel ill (oh, and kills people too). If you had to endure the smell of shit wafting through your living quarters, how would you feel? Because shit smells bad, and so does cigarette smoke.

Last I checked, you spend most of your time complaining about how cigarette smoke is exactly like the smell of shit, which leads me to believe that your primary concern is that you don’t like it. Shit-smell is not carcinogenic (that I know of).

Seriously? You are familiar with the concept of a drama queen, right?

Yes, I do. I don’t mind it a bit. Opinions vary.

In the amounts that you might experience when living down the hall from a smoker in a dorm? Get real.

Your drinking does not affect me; your smoking, even if it’s in a different room will affect me. What I said in another thread:

RE: letting her smoke in one room in the house. You’re fooling yourselves if you think that the smoke smell will stay in that one room. When we smoked in the apartment, I always kept the bedroom door closed and I kept all of my clothes in a closet in the corner of the bedroom. The closet door was always closed, too. To this day, if I go into that closet and pick up an article of clothing that I haven’t worn since February, it smells like smoke. These are clothes that had two doors and a large non-smoking room between them and they still smelled like smoke. Just my two cents.

Oh gee, Diogenes is being an ass! What a surprise!

Get this through your thick fucking inconsiderate skull-sometimes, cigarette smoke DOES make people sick. It’s no different than heavy perfume doing so. I have epilepsy. When I was unmedicated, heavy scents used to trigger my seizures. Just as some people are bothered by bright flashing lights, I was bothered by heavy smells.

I don’t give a shit if you don’t believe me, you fucking prick. I DO give a shit if you don’t at least make an effort to be a considerate human being. Grow the fuck up, you selfish, immature shiteating pisslicking slimeball. The last time I used a phrase like “Narky McNarkerPants”, I was about ten years old.

Unless it happens to be a migraine trigger, like in me. Or it can trigger an asthma reaction in a number of people on the board and my cousin Kim. Or you dont want your hair and clothing to smell vile because you are pregnant and hypersensitive to smells that can and will trigger intense nausea …
