Stopping HD "parking"

OK, I’ve had enough of my 100 gig Maxtor so I’m asking here before I remove it.

Is there any setting in XP pro to stop a drive from spinning down and “parking” itself? All my power settings are max so my Hitachi drive isn’t stopping but my Maxtor 100 gig is parking itself and randomly activates (say, when I’m playing a game off my C: drive) and pauses the WHOLE system while it spins up to 7200 rpm…this takes about 10 seconds…and this happens every 20 minutes.

I was under the impression that auto-park might be a jumper changable setting but I don’t see any setting for that. Are there programs online to stop a drive from parking itself?

Hell, I’m tempted to install it in a HD shuttle and keep it out of my system until I need it (it’s only for storage).

Thanks for any thoughts!

Control Panel

->(You may have another screen here, since I don’t, I don’t know what the choice is)

-> Power Options

And make sure that “Turn off Hard Disks” is set to “Never”

Check on Maxtor’s website to see if this is a known issue that migh be cured with a new driver/whatever. It sounds like Windows is doing the “Never” drive shutdown as your Hitachi drive keeps on going - but the Maxtor is doing its own thing.

Yeah, the power settings are maxed out except for the monitor. I only have 2 drives yet the Maxtor powers down while the Hitachi does not (even with I don’t do anything, I’ve never had to wait for the Hitachi to power up like the Maxtor does).

Yeah, I guess I’ll have to get the product code and do some searches. I just hoped there would be a quick answer I didn’t think of :slight_smile:

You could try running their PowerMax utility, though it might not detect this type of problem.
