Store and other business names that bug you

Is the fashion chain French Connection known in the US? According to wiki it’s

  • and in its home territory it styles itself FCUK.

Oh, ha ha. Very fcuking funny. Just childish - how could anyone not be annoyed?

Also, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a store, but I’m familiar with the name Hobby Lobby. I mean, it’s just not necessary AND it’s stupid. It’s not a lobby, for chrissakes.

j

They don’t?

[Not an attempt at a whoosh, note: I honestly thought that they did…]

Along those lines, I nominate Tuesday Morning. Still not sure what the heck they sell.

Of course, Bank of Montreal is another big bank here, and then they started calling themselves BMO. But BMO is just an abbreviation for Bank of Montreal, and yet many of their signs say “BMO Bank of Montreal,” which literally means Bank Of Montreal Bank of Montreal. Maybe after you get cash there you can bring us food from Pizza Pizza.

The next town over from me has a chinese restaurant called Shao Ting Guo. Supposedly the correct way to pronounced it is “Shit and go”.

Then RΛSPUTIИ Music must really grate your ass. That’s the name of a chain of music stores in and around the San Francisco Bay Area.

The frozen yogurt franchise Menchie’s. This shouldn’t bother me. It’s in no way a play on menstruation, but between menses, menarche, et al. It’s the only image that comes to mind.

How do you feel about mensches, then? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, try spoonerism on That!

It’s called that because they get (or got) overstocks on Tuesday mornings, which they then price and sell.

The one in my old town got shut down, and some of the employees arrested, because they were skimming the best things and selling them on eBay.

I’m British – have often seen in Britain, those initials “FCUK” – presumed that they denoted a “sniggery-clever” brand name of something or other; but had never felt interested enough to enquire further. Now I know – and agree with you: knowledge not worth the having !

Long ago, I often went past a Chinese takeaway in south London, named Lok How Fook. Always suggested to me, catering especially for the voyeur trade…

The plague of “& Such” stores is nationwide (“Knitting & Such”, “Pet Grooming & Such”, “Baggy Old Clothes & Such” etc.). At least be mildly clever about the variety of crap you sell i.e. Bed Bath & Beyond.

I once dreamed of opening a chain of convenience stores called “Shit ‘N’ Git”.

Thank God you don’t make the Rusty Trombone sound!

The Home Depot. It’s the ‘The’ part that gets me. It seems awkward and also overreaching.

Exactly how I feel about The Ohio State University.

We had a store in our neighborhood in the Bronx since the 1960s that was called “Records ‘n’ Stuff.” It had a few LPs and posters and such;), but it was always almost empty of merchandise (and customers). We were convinced it was some kind of drug front. It finally closed a few years ago.

I’m amazed to learn there is such a thing as a “chain of music stores” anymore.

There used to be fast food chain called “Hot ‘n Now.” I remember seeing them in the Fresno area.

I guess I should not invite you if I decide to actually cook one for a Christmas banquet, then?
