Stores that sell you the display model

I went to buy sunglasses today. I looked at a few pairs and found one I liked - a nice, polarized set of Oakleys. Expensive. I told the clerk I’d take them, and she grabbed an Oakley box from under the display cabinet and started to put them in there.

“Hold it,” I said. “I don’t want those, I want a new pair.”

“These are new,” she replied, looking at me like a small child.

“No, they’re not, they’ve been taken out of their box and put in the display cabinet. I want a new pair.”

She looked at the sunglasses in her hand. I could see a big thumbprint on one of the lenses. “There’s nothing wrong with these,” she said, authoritatively.

“I don’t care. For $200, I want new ones.”

She looked at the shelf. “These are the only ones we have,” she said, not very authoritatively.

I looked at the shelf. “You mean, if I were to buy them, you’d just have an empty slot on the shelf? What would you put in their place?”

She grimaced. “Hold on a minute.”

She went back to the desk and rummaged around in drawers for a bit. Soon a new pair of sunglasses emerged, and I paid for them and left.

I have had this happen many times, mostly buying sunglasses and watches, but often with other products as well. Since when has it become acceptable to sell the display models at the same price as new ones?

I don’t want to buy the sunglasses that have been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long, that every dumb schmuck who wanders into the store can try on, scratch, bend, and otherwise screw up.

I don’t want to inspect my brand-new sunglasses for damage. That’s why I’m buying goddamned new sunglasses! If I wanted to put up with this shit, I’d buy a pair used on eBay.

Christ.

I’ve bought the display model a few times, but never for full price. Maybe you just got a dumbass.

I would say it’s highly unusual for a display model of anything to be full price. I’ve bought display models of items now and again, often at price cuts of 50% or more. Sounds like you got someone who wanted to really pad revenues.

If you are going to a place like the Sunglasses Slut they keep 90% of their inventory on display.
In a store such as that, I would not expect a discount.
Hint: If you want a brand new pair of Oakleys, buy them from Oakley direct.
Oakley

This happened to me recently at Staples. They had a flat screen monitor on sale for $189, and I told the salescritter I would like to by one. After looking on the shelf for a nanosecond, he said that the display was the last one. I asked if he would discount the display unit, and he grudgingly said he would let me have it for $175, not even 10% off. I asked if he had the box, and he said no. I offered him $140, and he looked at me like I just offered him a steaming turd sandwich, and walked away. I bought my monitor at Best Buy.

Every pair of sunglasses I’ve ever bought have been off of a display. Never had any problems. My wife ordered me a pair of Tag Heuer sunglasses on line. I look like fuckin’ Willy Wonka in these suckers. Another week and in hiding they go. Raybans, now those are sunglasses. Fuckin’ Tag heuer  They need to stick to watches.

Sun glasses cost $10 at Walgreens. Why would you pay $200?
The $10 pairs last me 4 months or so, before they get lost or broken. Even if I sometimes get the expensive $15-20 ones at gas stations or Target, I am still paying under $50 a year for sunglasses. Does a $200 pair of sunglasses hold up for 4 years?

Yes, actually. I think I got my last pair about 3-4 years ago. And they’re a lot nicer to wear for those four years than 12 pairs of $10 sunglasses.

My pair of Emporio Armani prescription polarized tinted sunglasses have held up for about five years, and there’s no reason they won’t hold up for another five. I may eventually update the prescription, but they’re still just as sturdy and comfortable as they were the day I bought them. Then again, I take care of them, but I suppose the short answer to your question would be “yes”.

I also firmly believe that you always get what you pay for, but I may be in the minority in that regard. And no, I did not, and will not ever buy anything from Sunglass Hut, just like I wouldn’t buy pizza from Pizza Hut, or do business with Jabba the Hutt. Huts should be avoided for all transactions involving money in exchange for goods or services.

That was pretty good!

Or even 4 pair of $50 glasses, for that matter. I just bought a pair of really nice Natives. They’ve got three different lenses (dark, amber, clear), they’re all polarized, vented (for weight more than airflow, I think), and are extremely light. After wearing them for a week or two, and using my $80 Bolles when I couldn’t find them, it just felt… wrong.

This one of the things that really irritate me getting prescription glasses. You can only get ones that have been tried on by everybody. They apparently don’t feel a need to stock sizes and varieties not bent out of shape. I don’t want a pair of glasses made with ones that are already bent and stressed out of shape, and who would.

Really? It was pretty late when I typed that and I expected I’d wake up today and read that and wonder just what the hell I was thinking when I wrote it.

Indeed! Almost Buellerian.

A related peeve is when I buy an appliance or whatever and the box looks like it’s already been opened, then taped shut.

Although I suppose it’s inevitable if you shop at a store that allows returns.

For example, suppose you buy a mattress from a company that has a 7 day return policy? When you think about it, there’s a decent chance that your mattress is a return and the company just put the mattress in fresh plastic.

Really? That’s never happened to me, but I also usually have to wait a week or so to get my new pair. I suppose that’s the difference between getting them at the optometrist and going to Lens Crafters or somesuch.

It’s also a problem at self-service stores where customers have no problem with tearing boxes open to peek inside; a lot of those boxes that have been taped shut possibly never left the shelf, but were opened simply to satisfy some customer’s curiosity.

(I have a particular hate for customers who open a box to check on the contents and then take the unopened box behind it when they decide to purchase the item.

You don’t find it out until after the eye exam either.

I have over 20 pairs of good sunglasses including the first pair I ever bought. I change them just like my wife changes purses. Which are also top quality.

I’ll bet you drive a really nice car, too.
